What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Technician II position at Bio-Rad Laboratories?
The Engineering Technician II is a vital team player for the Production Team at the Richmond Chemical Plant that manufactures chromatography resins, liquid buffers, monomer solutions, oils, and other specialized life science products. This role supports the production team day to day by efficiently scheduling complex work processes across different equipment/work centers, preparing production procedures for batch release and reviewing operator inputs to ensure accurate and correct entries, monitoring real-time manufacturing processes, and investigating process deviations and quality concerns. This role is also a driver for continuous improvement and will become an expert in the processes and as such be a key participant in root cause analysis, new product introduction and scale up and in improving existing process paperwork and department flow.
How You'll Make An Impact:
- Support 'right first time' production by monitoring processes in real time and providing support and reprioritizing as needed to meet schedule needs. Help troubleshoot technical chemical processing issues in production, work with other technical functions and propose remediations.
- Create production schedules with Planning outputs, addressing priorities and schedule adherence for customer commitments. Follow up daily on work progress, negotiating downtime and recovery plans to get back on schedule when needed.
- Perform final production batch record reviews and SAP transactions for product release as requested by management.
- Write/lead technical root-cause investigations for quality-related batch issues working with other technical departments to determine courses of action when reworks and processing remediations are necessary and overseeing process to ensure completion as prescribed.
- Initiate and execute internal document improvements to reduce risk of product and documentation errors: streamline batch records, work instructions, and procedures, edit for accuracy and ease of use.
- Lead and complete individual projects of varying sizes and complexity and be production SME in continuous improvement, new product introduction, scale-ups, engineering projects, and production process improvements.
- Become department level expert (SME) on your processes so that you can effectively train operators on equipment and production procedures.
- Develop strong relationships with key internal teams (Planning, Quality Control, Finishing, Warehouse) and cultivate a good working relationship with R&D so as to be most effective in assigned work.
- With Production Management team drive continuous improvement and safety culture.
What You Bring:
- Education: Minimum associates degree in an Engineering or Scientific field with preference to a bachelors degree. A high school diploma, or equivalent, will be considered with appropriate work experience.
- Work Experience: 5 years combination of education and of chemical/biological production experience required, preferably in a regulated environment (ex. Pharma, life sciences, chemical production). Experience working with Chemical Reactors is a plus.
- Advanced knowledge of math used in chemical manufacturing processes and quality records in an ISO controlled, or similar, environment.
- Demonstrated technical documentation and communication skills, both verbal and written (e.g., work instructions, memos, training plans, root cause analysis, deviation reports).
- Good problem-solving, organizational, analytical & critical thinking skills. Demonstrated Continuous Improvement skills (Lean, TPM, 6-sigma, etc.) Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft office tools. Word and Excel are required. Experience working with ERP systems, SAP is a plus.
- Experience working in compliance with hazardous material regulations and wastewater handling is helpful.
- Experience working with ERP systems, SAP preferred.
- Able to make routine decisions and determine priorities and requirements with minimal guidance and direction.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $78,400 to $107,800 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
