JOB SUMMARY:
The Lab Technician has overall responsibility to maintain the discovery chemistry lab and all lab equipment. Performs maintenance work on equipment in the lab to ensure smooth operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in daily cleaning of glassware for chemists.
- Performs preventive maintenance on lab equipment.
- Supports chemists and Environmental Health and Safety Manager in the waste handling process.
- To be Trained for on-the-job safe handling practices. Assist in collecting waste and pouring it up 1-2 times a week.
- Attend training to become a certified DOT shipper of hazardous waste as back-up for Environmental Health and Safety Manager. Includes instruction on how to package and prepare drums for transport of hazardous waste.
- Serves as back-up to Environmental Health and Safety Manager in handling hazardous waste to include packaging and shipping
- Participate as a member of the Emergency Response Team. Receives training on how to respond to emergencies during and after work hours and to respond to emergencies from the fire detection system or the intrusion detection system after hours.
- Must attend a 40-hour training class and become a certified Hazardous Materials Technician.
- Assists in managing the updated chemical inventory system (incoming and outgoing).
- Supports other responsibilities as required by discovery chemistry group
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum one years’ experience working in a lab preferred.
- Must be able to lift 5-gallon cans of liquid waste (35-65 pounds).
- Ability to learn lab processes while adhering to safety regulations.
- Experience in entering data using Microsoft office.
- Experience in interacting with various vendors.
- Pay attention to details.
- Ability to distinguish priorities at work.
- Self-motivated worker able to meet timelines provided by supervisor.
- Ability to work independently after adequate training.
- Basic computer knowledge needed.
- Good written and verbal communication skills
