The Construction Manager will join the growing BioMADE Manufacturing Team. Reporting to the Senior Director of Capital Projects in the Minneapolis office, this position will be responsible for active and engaged management of a portfolio of BioMADE projects. BioMADE is a non-profit Department of Defense-sponsored Manufacturing Innovation Institute, part of Manufacturing USA, and works closely with the DoD to identify and advance projects beneficial to national defense and to expand the domestic bio-industrial manufacturing base.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Project Planning and Management:
- Oversee capital projects with budgets between $50MM and $200MM, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and timelines.
- Develop and implement detailed project plans tailored to fermentation and downstream processing facility requirements, including schedules, budgets, and resource allocation.
- Oversee the construction of specialized infrastructure such as bioreactors, cleanrooms, and process piping systems.
- Monitor project progress and proactively address risks specific to biotechnology operations.
Team Leadership:
- Lead cross-functional teams, including subcontractors, vendors, and consultants specializing in fermentation and downstream processing.
- Foster collaboration among stakeholders such as process engineers, facility designers, and regulatory teams.
Quality Control and Compliance:
- Ensure construction activities meet regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, cGMP) and industry best practices.
- Conduct inspections to confirm adherence to process-specific requirements, such as aseptic conditions and equipment integration.
Budget Management:
- Manage project finances, ensuring adherence to budgets ranging from $50MM to $200MM, including cost estimation for fermentation and downstream processing systems, budget tracking, and invoice approvals.
- Identify cost-effective solutions while maintaining technical and quality standards.
Contract Negotiation and Management:
- Review and negotiate contracts with vendors and subcontractors specializing in bioprocessing equipment and services.
- Ensure timely and accurate delivery of specialized components.
- Ability to negotiate difficult conversations with stakeholders to ensure cost, schedule, and delivery of scope of work
Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare detailed progress reports for stakeholders, including updates on project milestones, budget status, and compliance with biosafety and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain records of project activities, including commissioning, validation, and qualification processes.
- Must possess a Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related field.
- Must possess 10 years of experience in construction management, with proven experience managing large-scale capital projects ranging from $50MM to $200MM.
- Must possess a thorough understanding of bioprocessing methods preferred relating to equipment, and facility requirements (e.g., bioreactors, centrifuges, chromatography systems).
- Knowledge of regulatory standards for pharmaceutical and biotech facilities (e.g., FDA, cGMP, EHS) required.
- Proven leadership skills and ability to manage multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in software tools, including Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, and the full Microsoft Office suite.
- Must possess excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations and safety standards is required.
- PMP or equivalent certification is a plus.
- Must possess the ability to travel up to 30% of the time.
