Refrigeration Technician

BIOLYPH is growing! We are expanding our Refrigeration Team and are seeking an experienced and team-oriented Refrigeration Technician to maintain and repair freeze drying, walk-in cooler/freezer, chiller compressor rack refrigeration equipment, and general facility maintenance. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate in the licensed construction trades early to mid-career looking to go a different direction working for an owner directly, at a single site, in the Diagnostics and Life Sciences biotechnology sector.

Outcomes:

• Maximize the reliability of refrigeration systems with minimal downtime to manufacturing production.
• Refrigeration Technician taking ownership of all refrigeration work, whether self-performed or subcontracted. The vast majority of the work is expected to be self-performed and will require prioritization and planning. Subcontracted refrigeration service providers will be made available and supervised by this technician where backlogs and emergencies arise.

Essential Functions:

• On Call, prompt emergency service for refrigeration equipment.
• Operate, maintain, inspect, test, and troubleshoot refrigeration equipment and systems to diagnose performance gaps, and ensure systems are safe and in compliance with OSHA and Process Safety Management program.
• Independently replace or repair refrigeration components such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, expansion devices, solenoid valves, sensing devices, pressure switches, instrumentation, controls, pumps, electric heaters, and related appurtenances. Includes wiring, pipe fitting, evacuation, charging, leak detection, and start up.
• Execute preventive maintenance work orders for refrigeration equipment issued by Quality Management.
• Prepare accurate and timely documentation adhering to Good Documentation Practices (GDP) such as daily operational logs, equipment activity reports, and start up or operational qualifications.
• Direct and coordinate with vendors and subcontracted service providers for facilities HVAC&R, electrical, plumbing, compressed air and medical gas systems, building envelope, and site.
• General facility maintenance.

Qualifications:

• HVAC&R Pipefitter Journeyman or equivalent: 2 years vocational trade school, 5 year apprenticeship, welding, and brazing certifications. Workmanship to high professional industry standards and in compliance with Federal, State, County, and City codes, regulations, and ordinances.
• Universal EPA license to purchase, handle, and track refrigerants.
• Desirable but not required:
  • City of Minneapolis or equivalent Competency Cards for Refrigeration, Steam, and Hot Water.
  • State of Minnesota Plumbing Pipelayer’s Card.
  • State of Minnesota Boiler Engineer License.
• Continuing education in RETA and other industry-specific courses is supported and strongly encouraged.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Freeze Dryers: Ultra-low temperature (-58 to -148°F), single halocarbon refrigerant, two-stage systems, reciprocating compressor.
• Walk-in Coolers and Freezers: Forced circulation air coolers (-40 to 30°F).
• Industrial Chillers: Low-charge parallel compressor rack systems with remote air cooled condenser and glycol fluid evaporator.
• Interpreting electrical wiring diagrams, system schematic diagrams, equipment submittals, and controls points, sequence of operations, and programmable logic controllers.
• Desirable but not required:
  • Rooftop Air Handling and Fan Coil Units: Packaged DX refrigeration for air conditioning.
  • Pharmaceutical and In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) industry: Participation in Preventive Maintenance documentation and FDA Validation activities. Good Documentation Practices with Preventive Maintenance and Equipment Activity Reports.

  • Air Compressors and Medical Gas Systems
  • Ancillary Trades: Plumbing, Electrical (High and Low Voltage)
  • Facility Management Systems and Alarm Systems: Emerson UltraSite, Resideo Total Connect.
• Can lift 20 lbs frequently and 50 lbs occasionally, can move up and down ladders and are comfortable working at heights.
• Purchasing parts and supplies for equipment maintenance activity. Maintaining all tools and equipment in clean and safe order.
