The Injection Molding Tooling Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the tools, dies, molds, and fixtures used in the production of parts or products. This role ensures that all tooling is functional, efficient, and capable of producing high-quality components according to the specifications. The Tooling Engineer will collaborate with various teams such as design, production, and quality control to optimize tool performance, reduce costs, and enhance production efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Tooling Design Review: Conduct in-depth reviews of tooling designs for plastic components, ensuring they meet engineering standards, manufacturing requirements, and customer specifications.
- Collaboration with Engineering Teams: Work closely with engineering teams to design and develop tools that prioritize cost efficiency while maintaining high quality standards.
- Mold Flow Analysis: Utilize mold flow simulation software to analyze the flow of plastic into molds, identifying potential issues and optimizing tooling designs to enhance production efficiency.
- Supplier Collaboration (RFQ Process): Partner with tooling suppliers during the Request for Quotation (RFQ) process, developing optimized tooling solutions that balance cycle time, quality, and cost.
- Documentation: Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date documentation on tooling designs, analysis results, and process improvements.
- Adherence to Industry Standards & Continuous Improvement: Ensure tooling processes align with industry standards and remain informed on the latest tooling technologies to drive continuous improvement in capabilities and performance.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or a related field.
- Additional certifications or training in tooling, CAD, or related areas is a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in tooling engineering or a related manufacturing engineering role.
- Hands-on experience with injection molding tool design, manufacturing processes, and tool maintenance.
- Strong background in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) for tooling design.
Skills:
- Expert knowledge of injection molding tooling design and mold making processes.
- Proficient with GD&T, SPC, DOE and Six Sigma techniques.
- Knowledge of plastic processes of 2-shot molding, IMD, IML, and insert molding.
- Knowledge of secondary processes such as machining and decorating (anodizing, plating, painting).
- Experience with CAD software (solidworks modeling) .
- Experience with injection molding tool quoting, price negotiations, and cost breakdowns.
- Strong understanding of mold flow analysis.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
