The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Program Description

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

Key Roles/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will require a comprehensive knowledge of small animal imaging and a unique blend of administrative skills to manage a multi-disciplinary team. The responsibilities of the Small Animal Imaging Program (SAIP) Director will include but are not limited to:

  • Supervision of SAIP personnel. Provide guidance to and oversee the training of research associates.
  • Maintain a safe working environment especially with respect to high magnetic fields, radioactive tracers, and biologics
  • Oversee SAIP budget preparation and cost accounting
  • Supervision of investigator studies. Will participate in administrative meetings, act as an expert in developing new imaging protocols, and work with investigators to optimize imaging and design experiments.
  • Ensure regulatory policy, and safety compliance. Will assist in the writing of regulatory protocols (ACUC, IBC, and Radiation Safety)
  • Conduct data collection, analysis and interpretation; prepare manuscripts, and present results at local, national, and international meetings.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise by reading literature, interacting with other experts and attending scientific meetings
  • Collaborate with other Leidos Biomedical Research labs, animal facilities, and the NCI steering committee to optimize equipment utilization, investigate novel imaging agents and bring multipronged projects to fruition


Basic Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Doctoral degree (e.g. M.D. or PhD) in biomedical research from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum twelve (12) years of post-graduate experience.
    • Including at least five (5) years at a Senior Scientist level.
  • Five (5) or more years managing a complex program or large production unit.
  • Experience in the areas of X-ray CT, SPECT, PET, Ultrasound, MRI and small animal imaging.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Demonstrated experience directing or operating a multi-modality imaging facility.
