Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct O&M instruction to students with visual impairments, focusing on developing independent mobility skills.
- Assess students' needs, create individualized instruction plans, and monitor progress.
- Work with students on skills such as travel techniques, environmental awareness, orientation, and safety in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other staff members to ensure a comprehensive support plan for each student.
- Participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings and provide input on goals and progress.
- Support students during the extended school year (summer session), ensuring continuity in their mobility training.
- Provide guidance and support to staff members to increase awareness and accessibility for students with visual impairments.
- Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS).
- Experience working with students with visual impairments in an educational setting.
- Ability to develop individualized mobility plans based on each student’s unique needs.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with a team of educators, students, and families.
- Experience working across multiple sites is a plus.
- Possession of the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) credential
- Experience in providing O&M instruction to students at various educational levels.
