JOB DESCRIPTION:
To provide the safest and most efficient transportation possible for the students of the Birmingham City Schools district. Help students board the bus, learning which students take their route and planning around traffic during trips. School Bus Drivers supervise students as they cross the street and enter or exit the bus, greet them and manage their behavior during the bus ride. School Bus Drivers usually take the same routes in the morning and afternoon each day but may adjust their schedules for extracurricular and special events.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates a school bus on a daily route.
- Transports students to and from schools or school activities following a preplanned route and time schedule; transports only authorized students and discharges student only at authorized stop.
- Remains on duty during bus operating periods (normally 6:15 a.m. to 8:45a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.) or until all students are safe and bus has returned to the terminal.
- Knowledge of the Birmingham area and familiar with names and locations of schools and streets.
- Ability to relate and communicate with people in an effective.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must meet all physical, mental, and other requirements established by the State of Alabama and the Federal Government to be qualified to operate a school bus.
- Must have a valid Alabama Class B (or Class A) Commercial Driver License with passenger and school bus endorsements. This license must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
- Must have a valid Alabama State Department of Education School Bus Driver Certificate.
- This certificate must be maintained and renewed annually as a condition of continued employment.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must pass pre-employment drug test. Will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing after hiring.
- Must pass at any time, a reasonable examination concerning traffic laws, state and local transportation rules, and driving skills.
- Employment gained in the private employment sector may be considered.
