Long Bar Shear Operator
Classification: Non-exempt
Reports to: Long Bar Manager
Summary
The Long Bar Shear Operator will be responsible for moving raw material to a shear machine and cutting the correct number of bars on customer orders in a timely manner while focusing on safety and maintaining a tidy work area.
Job Duties & Requirements:
- Sets up and operates power shear to cut steel bars to specified lengths and specific quantities.
- Positions material in the correct diameter hole within the shear machine and work with another employee to properly measure each bar to the correct length.
- Use foot pedal to cut each bar to the correct length.
- Document the Heat # used for each bar cut on the Work Order provided for each diameter of material being cut.
- Maintain scrap material log for all material under 24” long that cannot be used.
- Complete production, downtime, and quality inspection report daily.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds to lift and position material into holders of machines.
- Must be able to read a tape measure.
- Work environment warehouse, plant or production areas with periods of continue standing or walking.
- Lifts work piece manually or by hoist or crane to machine bed or roller table and positions it against side guide and end stops.
- May inspect work using tape, template or micrometer to verify dimensions.
- Clean and sweep work area as needed to maintain a tidy work center.
- Performs other duties as required.

Physical/Cognitive Demands
This is largely a physically active role including walking long distances (over uneven surfaces) to/within our production facility, lifting 50lbs or more, and standing for long periods. Position also requires bending, stooping, squatting or standing as necessary. Cognitive abilities required include deductive reasoning, information ordering, oral comprehension, oral expression, problem sensitivity, written comprehension, and written expression. This job operates in a manufacturing plant setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, heavy machinery, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can at times be loud; the use of hearing protection is required.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, and typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mandatory weekend and overtime hours are required on a recurring basis.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- 2 years’ experience operating large machinery
