What are the responsibilities and job description for the Histology Assistant position at BIRMINGHAM GASTROENTEROLOGY ASSOCIATES?
The histology assistant is a mid-level medical professional whose role is to assist and support senior staff in the preparation of biopsies for pathologic diagnosis. This is primarily an administrative role, but for motivated individuals there may be opportunities to learn clinical skills. Critical thinking and the ability to work closely with others is required.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive and accession specimens as they arrive in the lab.
- File slides and paperwork after diagnoses have been rendered.
- Manage internal and external sendout requests.
- Answer and direct phonecalls.
- Collect and maintain quality control records.
- Understand and comply with HIPPA requirements at all times.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
Minimum qualifications:
- Previous experience working in a histologic, clinical, or research laboratory.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Excellent organizational and computer skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a small team.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred:
- MLT or HT certification from ASCP
- An associate degree consisting of 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR bachelor’s degree including 24 semester hours of science courses that consist of 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
