Summary: The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for a broad range of Nursing Department services, including staff hiring, establishing departmental procedures, staff training, and organizing and delivering nursing care to facility residents. The DON works closely with all levels of nursing staff, particularly with key professional staff. The DON is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to residents on all shifts and serve as a liaison with other departments and outside individuals and organizations providing related services to the residents. The DON also communicates with family and physicians to ensure optimum care for the residents.
Requirements
● Nursing School Graduate and current unencumbered VA license
● Registered Nurse
● At least 3 years of experience as a DON, preferably in long-term care and/or rehabilitative/restorative nursing
● Adult CPR (current certification) and IV Therapy certificates
● Knowledge of medical/nursing practices and procedures, laws, regulations, and guidelines, including those related to nursing and assisted living care, facilities, and Medicare
● Sound nursing judgment and hands-on nursing care skills, including the ability to deliver urgent nursing care when necessary
● Used to behavior and needs of elderly people, as well as integrity and discretion in dealing with personal and health information (including HIPAA compliance)
● Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and leadership skills
● Can read and interpret technical instructions and materials, accurately document treatment, and write clear reports and business correspondence
● Problem-solver, detail-oriented, and able to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
● Good basic math and computer skills
● Organized, adaptable, patient, reliable, safety-minded, empathetic, and a team player! Main tasks and responsibilities
● Plan, organize, and implement a nursing services program to meet resident medical needs
● Coordinate resident admission with families and social services departments
● Monitor care and develop care plans, consulting with physicians and staff
● Maintain relationships with physicians, pharmacists, and service providers
● Coordinate nursing services with other resident services for continuity of care
● Oversee staffing, including interviewing, hiring, and training
● Collaborate the development of policies and guidelines for the nursing assistant training program
● Investigate and respond to resident and family concerns
● Develop policies and guidelines for a geriatric nursing assistant training program
● Oversee ordering and care of supplies and equipment
● Complete required forms, reports, evaluations, and studies
● Ensure compliance with policies and procedures for personnel, residents, and visitors
● Maintain and update written policies and procedures
● Participate in surveys, inspections, in-service classes, and meetings
● Participate in Nursing Administration on-call rotation

Education and Experience:
§ Current unencumbered RN (preferred) license through college, associate degree, or three-year diploma school. BSN is preferred.
§ Three – Five years experience in a long-term care facility as a DON or ADON. Rehabilitative and restorative nursing skills are preferred.
§ Knowledge and experience related to the physical and emotional needs of disabled adults and the elderly.
§ Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to assisted living care.
§ Computer skills – MS Word, Excel, Outlook; Point Click Care
