Summary: The Environmental Services Supervisor is responsible for insuring the cleanliness, sanitation, and orderliness of the community as well as insuring the delivery of adequate clean clothing and linen to residents throughout the community. The Supervisor supervises, maintains, and evaluates the housekeeping and laundry functions, requiring compliance with cleanliness standards and ensuring prompt and efficient delivery of linens. The Supervisor also works cooperatively with other community staff, and provides guidance and leadership to Environmental Services staff. The Supervisor interacts daily with residents and performs these activities in a manner consistent with ensuring resident rights, safety, and dignity.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate experience and ability to work well with people under crises with an emphasis on the geriatric and disabled population. Candidate must have working knowledge of Medicaid and Auxiliary Grant eligibility requirements and basic medical terminology.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, memos, procedure manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions.
- Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to residents, staff, families, and vendors.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
- Must possess excellent organizational, written, presentation, communication, and strong customer relations skills.
- Must be detail oriented.

Minimum Qualifications:
- The Environmental Services Supervisor must possess a high school diploma, or G.E.D., and at least one year supervisory experience, or have demonstrated on-the-job leadership abilities. The Supervisor must possess knowledge related to institutional cleaning and laundry methods and procedures.
- Must be able to safety perform all essential job functions without harm to self or others with or without reasonable accommodations.
Job Responsibilities:
General:
- Spends 20 - 40% of time assisting Environmental Services staff with special cleaning or laundry projects. Performs routine duties as time permits for absent employees within the Housekeeping and Laundry Departments.
- Inspects resident rooms and all areas of the building to ensure that cleanliness standards are being maintained; designs and implements plan(s) of action to correct any deficiencies.
- Ensures that standard cleaning and laundry procedures are being followed; evaluates effectiveness and makes adaptations when necessary.
- Keeps an accurate inventory of housekeeping and other related supplies at all times and orders as necessary.
- Develops, enforces, evaluates, and adapts safety guidelines for Environmental Services procedures throughout the community.
- Ensures that resident rooms are cleaned and prepared for new admissions. Oversees, organizes, and ensures waste collection and vermin control.
- Checks marking on residents' clothes and other linens of the community and marks as required if necessary. Inspects articles for wear and tear.
- Abides by Laundry Department policies, practices and standards of cleaning. Follows established safety guidelines.
- Inspects all window treatments throughout the community on an ongoing basis for signs of wear, soil, or need of repair; takes appropriate action to ensure that window treatments are clean and serviceable at all times.
- Coordinates duties and functions of the Environmental Services Department with other departments as necessary.
Supervisory:
- Develops monthly work schedule for employees in the Housekeeping and Laundry Department. Assigns regular duties and special duties as needed to staff.
- Periodically inspects completed work and tasks of subordinates for quality and quantity, insuring that standards are met and known; assists in tasks when necessary.
- Initiates, develops, and conducts regular departmental training programs regarding, but not limited to: proper cleaning methods, equipment and chemical safety, resident rights, demonstration of new equipment or supplies, and community policies and procedures.
- Completes and presents individual written performance evaluations of department employees on a timely basis in consultation with the Director of Support Services. Develops goals for individual performance of self and staff.
- Applies all rules, policies, and standards in a fair and consistent manner throughout the department. Initiates employee counseling and/or discipline on a timely basis as necessary and appropriate according to community policy.
- Interviews and tours prospective employees. Makes recommendations for hire.
- Conducts and documents regular department staff meetings. Conducts
- adequate orientation of all new department employees.
- Controls angry feelings and maintains a calming manner.
- Assists other staff members as needed within the limits of training and certification.
Environmental Conditions:
- Generally works indoors, but periodically walks outdoors between buildings and may be exposed for short periods of time to inclement weather while performing assigned duties. Exposed to hot, humid and noisy conditions in laundry area (frequently).
- Exposure to dust, mold, and other hazardous materials such as cleaning chemicals, laundry detergents, bleach, fumes, etc.
- The possibility of minor injury exists from strains, sprains, or falls, or burns from hot equipment.
- Exposure to blood, body tissues, and other potentially infectious fluids. (Occasionally)
- Exposure to hazardous waste materials other than blood, body tissues or other potentially infectious fluids. (Occasionally)
Equipment Utilized:
- Common electrical switches, plumbing valves and regulators, vacuum cleaners, brooms, mops,
buckets, brushes, sponges, scrapers, etc.
- Occasional exposure to latex/plastic, and or materials which are used for personal protection
(Universal Precautions).
Working Hours:
Usual shift length is 8 hours but may be modified to meet the demands of the department; rotating weekend work and holiday work is required. May be requested to stay beyond normal shift in emergency or unusual circumstances.
