DESCRIPTION
The Birmingham Public Library webmaster oversees the management and upkeep of the library's website. This includes responsibilities such as updating the design, creating content, ensuring functionality, and maintaining security. The webmaster ensures that the online presence accurately represents the library's services, events, and information, while also collaborating with library staff to integrate new content and features as necessary. Additionally, the webmaster must remain informed about advancements in web technology, utilize relevant software applications, create, edit, and convert graphic image files, and foster relationships across various departments. The role allows for a degree of independent judgment within the framework of established guidelines.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- General
o Check websites for bugs and problems, diagnose and fix them.
o Keep links to the Internet current.
o Carry out basic web browser functions.
o Utilize web editors.
o Create and edit HTML and ASP documents and load these edited documents on server.
o Assist in online resource management as necessary.
o Performs other duties as necessary.
- Website Design and Maintenance:
o Developing / maintaining library websites content, functionality, and design.
o Performing regular updates, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the BPL websites - both public and internal - including new link additions, periodic link testing/verification, content creation (including graphics), and bug fixes,
o Ensuring website layout and design to align with library branding.
o Managing website content, including text, images, and videos.
o Implementing changes to the website structure and navigation.
o Regularly reviewing and updating website content to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Content Creation and Management:
o Managing online surveys, voting, etc. as requested.
o Writing and editing website copy for library news, events, programs, services, and other website activities.
o Posting new information on the website in a timely manner.
o Managing online calendars, event listings, email blasts.
o Creating and maintaining digital library catalogs and databases accessible through the website.
- Technical Administration:
o Overseeing website hosting and domain management - Community Webs (Archive-It software) and OCLC’s CONTENTdm are examples.
o Monitoring website performance and addressing technical issues.
o Implementing/maintaining website analytics to track user engagement and identify areas for improvement, such as Google Analytics and AWStats.
o Staying updated on web development trends and technologies to optimize the website.
- Collaboration and Communication:
o Working with library staff to gather content and incorporate feedback on the website.
o Coordinating with other departments within the library to ensure consistency in online messaging.
o Assisting with training library staff on website updates and content management tools.

- Understanding principles of good web design as outlined by the W3 consortium.

- Ability to write clear and concise website copy, as well as effectively communicate with library staff and patrons.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of time; eyesight sufficient to read and understand information from PC monitors, and the manual dexterity necessary for the regular use of PCs; ability to stoop, twist, turn and move materials from place to place in the library. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The candidate must possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably in Computer Science or a related field, with three years of professional level work or other commensurate work experience. The applicant must have a valid Alabama driver’s license and be able to safely operate library vehicles as needed. Background check is required.
