What are the responsibilities and job description for the (OPAT)-Operator I Trainee position at Birmingham Water Works?
General Responsibilities :
Train under direct supervision to work as the assistant filter plant operator and operator of a state-approved water purification plant under ADEM Administrative Code Division Seven (7) Rules and Regulations governing public water supplies. Train and gain the required experience to become certified as a Grade IV Water Plant Operator.
Essential Job Functions :
- Assist the Filter Plant Operator in maintaining compliance with the Alabama Safe Drinking Water Act to ensure Public Health and Safety in operating a state-approved treatment plant
- Receive chemicals and make proper chemical feed settings and ensure feeders are correctly functioning
- Collect water samples and perform routine chemical, bacteriological and physical tests
- Train on chlorine cylinder handling and maintenance of chlorine feeder equipment
- Take readings, keep logs and assist with data collection and data entry on operations and equipment per ADEM Rules and Regulations ie, Turbidity records and Turbidimeters maintenance
- Assist in maintaining plant equipment process feeders, etc
- Function in other Operator Trainee slots that do not require certification
- Perform requisition order work using the SAP system
- Pass a respiratory, facial protective fit test successfully for handling chemicals this may include no facial hair for the protective fit test to be effective
- Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management
- Perform other duties as assigned..

Education :
High school diploma or equivalent required; two years of college or technical school preferred.
Certifications
Valid Driver’s License requiredFit Test for Respirator purposes requiredPassing grade on BWW Entrance Exam for Water Treatment Plants requiredGrade IV Water Treatment Plant Certification required or must obtain within 24 months of the hire date
Experience :
Two (2) years of maintenance or related experience preferred; a certificate from technical / trade school may offset one year of work experience. Strong aptitude for chemistry and math is required. Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
