Position Summary

The Director of Development reports to the Dean of Institutional Advancement and Community Affairs. The position is responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive fundraising programs, including annual fund, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts and gift planning, endowment, capital campaigns, and alumni and constituent relations efforts. The position is responsible for enhancing existing relationships and building new relationships, systems, and programs that elevate the generosity and resources of the community. The position provides support for special events and functions of the College, as appropriate, and support to the Bishop State Community College Foundation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive fundraising program that includes individual, group, and corporate giving; capital campaigns; digital/online fundraising; alumni outreach; employee outreach; planned giving; and estate planning to support the College’s strategic vision.
  • Identify, analyze, and pursue potential sources of additional funding from federal and state government, foundations, business and industry, and other appropriate sources.
  • Advance relationships with prospective donors through appropriate stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Manage operations that support fundraising, such as database management; prospect research and management; donor acknowledgement and communication; and establishment and management of fund agreements.
  • Manage the receipt, processing, and proper recording of all donations, ensuring accurate and timely logging in the fundraising software. Collaborate with the Business Office to reconcile donation records, maintain financial transparency, and comply with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Engage board members, volunteers, alumni, and friends of Bishop State through strategic personal communication, meetings, and events.
  • Track and report fundraising performance through key performance indicators and metrics, such as donor retention rates, growth in alumni participation, etc.
  • Actively participate in campus life, including attendance at key events such as athletic competitions, student performances, gift announcements, groundbreakings, and dedications. Host donors and prospects at events that advance stewardship and cultivate for future philanthropic support.
  • Lead the coordination of events and targeted drives for corporate and foundation donations and sponsorships.
  • Develop and monitor budgets to maximize financial resources.
  • Promote, maintain, grow, and administer scholarship programs.
  • Develop and maintain systems for identification of donors and potential donors, ensure timely acknowledgement of all contributions, and maintain communication with external prospects and donors on an ongoing basis.
  • Identify and seek grant opportunities from private and corporate foundations.
  • Attend all meetings of the Bishop State Community College Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Prepare appropriate agendas, support materials, minutes, financial reports, and presentations for Foundation meetings.
  • Coordinate Foundation activities with representatives of various campus constituencies, alumni, members of the Foundation Board, committees, and volunteer groups.
  • Devise effective internal and external fundraising messaging and methods of communication in collaboration with the Office of Marketing and Public Relations.
  • Strengthen relationships with alumni and alumni families to grow the alumni association.
  • Conduct consistent community outreach and actively participate in chambers of commerce, service clubs, organizations, and events within and outside the College.
  • Build a strong and effective network of supporters among the College's external public.
  • Assist in establishing an annual strategic plan for Institutional Advancement and Community Affairs, ensuring consistency with College goals and mission.
  • Establish and implement short- and long-term goals and priorities for the department.
  • Demonstrate a considerate, friendly, and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  • Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and technology that may affect program operations; implements policy and procedural changes as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college.
One (1) year of documented fundraising experience.
Ability to interact with a wide variety of constituents.

Preferred Requirements:
Experience with fundraising software, such as DonorPerfect.
Experience in event planning and management.
Experience in education, higher education, or nonprofit sector.
Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. Learned physical skill is required for keyboarding. Frequent walking, standing, or sitting may be required. Working hours may vary and occasional evening or weekend work is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.
Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly. State matches 13.57% (effective 10/01/24)
Tier II – Pays 6.20% monthly. State matches 12.60% (effective 10/01/24)

Health Insurance
PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control.
