The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring the highest quality standards for the installation of ultra-wideband (UWB) equipment as part of the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) project for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The Quality Engineer oversees the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) processes, ensuring compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. The Quality Engineer works closely with installation teams, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure the successful deployment of UWB equipment and systems. 



Essential Duties

  • Develop, implement, and maintain QA/QC plans and procedures for the installation of UWB equipment.
  • Conduct inspections and audits to ensure compliance with project specifications, design documents, and industry standards.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, tests, and quality audits.
  • Oversee the testing and validation of UWB equipment and systems to ensure proper functionality and performance.
  • Work closely with installation teams, engineers, and project managers to address quality-related issues.
  • Document instances of non-conformance, track corrective actions, and verify their implementation.
  • Ensure all work complies with MBTA standards, federal and state regulations, and safety requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance quality and efficiency.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in quality engineering, preferably in rail systems, transportation, or telecommunications.
  • Proven experience in QA/QC processes, inspections, and testing for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Valid Driver's License

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of UWB technology, RF systems, and wireless communication protocols.
  • Proficiency in quality management systems (QMS) and tools (e.g., ISO 9001, Six Sigma).
  • Familiarity with rail systems, train protection systems, or similar transportation projects.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate existing and potential problems and develop recommendations and courses of action to resolve the issues with the appropriate follow-up.
  • Ability to manage time and multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates responsibility, accountability, and commitment to established vision, mission and goals.
  • Ability to identify requirements and allocate and effectively use information, time and resources to satisfy objectives and priorities.
  • Ability to adapt behavior and work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
  • Ability to thoroughly and accurately complete complex work, focusing on all critical areas.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others and establish working relationships among team members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and intelligently in person, via telephone, and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or equivalent.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt.
  • PMP or other project management certification.
  • Advanced degree or certifications in Quality Engineering (e.g., CQE, Six Sigma).
  • Experience with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology or similar RF systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Walking and moving over uneven surfaces.
  • Stopping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Moving from one worksite to another.
  • Moving heavy objects in all directions up to 50 pounds.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repetitive motions with wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, standing or sitting for prolonged periods.

Additional Requirements

Employee Must:

  • Pass a background check.
  • Pass a drug screening i.e. a negative result.

Working Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  

  • On-site at MBTA Green Line project locations, including underground and outdoor environments.
  • May require occasional travel to project sites, supplier facilities, or stakeholder meetings.
  • May involve working flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, to support project deadlines.
  • Ability to work in various working conditions as necessitated by project requirements.
  • Low and high temperatures.
  • Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Noisy environments.
  • Small or enclosed spaces.

Additional Conditions of Employment

  • Employees are required to participate in and may be selected for a random monthly drug screening.
