The Systems Engineer plays a critical role in the design, integration, testing, and deployment of ultra-wideband (UWB) equipment for the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) project. This Systems Engineer has a deep understanding of UWB technology, systems engineering principles, and rail systems to ensure the successful implementation of the train protection system. The Systems Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software developers, and project managers, to deliver a reliable and efficient system that meets MBTA’s safety and performance requirements.
Essential Duties
- Develop and manage system requirements for UWB equipment, ensuring alignment with project goals and MBTA specifications.
- Oversee the integration of UWB equipment with existing train protection systems and
onboard/wayside components. - Serve as the technical lead for UWB systems, providing guidance to engineering teams and stakeholders.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure all UWB systems comply with MBTA standards, federal and state regulations, and industry best practices.
- Conduct system architecture design, including hardware, software, and communication interfaces.
- Develop and execute system integration test plans to verify functionality, performance, and interoperability.
- Maintain accurate records of system configurations, changes, and updates.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, including system design, test results, and performance analyses.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 5 years of experience in systems engineering, preferably in rail systems, transportation, or telecommunications.
- Proven experience in system design, integration, and testing for large-scale infrastructure projects.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Valid Driver's License.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of UWB technology, RF systems, and wireless communication protocols.
- Proficiency in systems engineering tools (e.g., MATLAB, SysML, DOORS).
- Ability to identify and evaluate existing and potential problems and develop recommendations and courses of action to resolve the issues with the appropriate follow-up.
- Ability to manage time and multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrates responsibility, accountability, and commitment to established vision, mission and goals.
- Ability to identify requirements and allocate and effectively use information, time and resources to satisfy objectives and priorities.

Preferred Qualifications
- PMP or other project management certifications.
- INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) or equivalent.
- Master's degree or advanced certifications in Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology or similar RF/wireless communication systems.
- Familiarity with rail systems, train protection systems, or similar transportation projects.
