What are the responsibilities and job description for the Founding Engineer - Electrical, Controls, and Automation position at Bits to Atoms (YC S24)?
About Bits to Atoms
Bits to Atoms connects exceptional talent with mission-driven companies working to rebuild the US industrial base.
Our partner company, Rhoic, is looking to hire a Founding Engineer.
Company Overview
Rhoic is an early-stage nanotech startup reimagining how high-performance materials are made—starting with nanofibers. Their next-generation electrospinning system enables the low-cost, scalable production of materials used in filtering forever chemicals, capturing carbon, and enhancing energy systems. With massive potential for impact in climate and health, Rhoic is building breakthrough technology from the ground up.
About the Role
This is a full-time, in-person position based in San Leandro. As a Founding Engineer, you'll join Rhoic at the earliest stage to help design, build, and scale its core electrospinning platform. The role spans mechanical, electrical, and embedded systems engineering. It’s ideal for a hands-on builder who’s excited to work across disciplines, iterate quickly in the lab, and contribute directly to solving global materials and climate challenges.
Main Responsibilities
- Build and iterate on Rhoic’s electrospinning platform across mechanical, electrical, and firmware domains
- Design and assemble high-voltage, high-precision hardware systems
- Develop firmware for real-time control of sensors and actuators (PID loops, test automation, data logging)
- Rapidly prototype using 3D printing, 8020, sheet metal, and other fabrication tools
- Design custom PCBs and electronics for system control and safety
- Lead the development and enforcement of lab safety protocols, especially around high-voltage systems
- Collaborate on product strategy, experimental design, and technical hiring decisions
Growth Opportunity and Targets
- Take on a high-ownership role in both product and company-building
- Help define the engineering culture and technical roadmap
- Contribute to hiring and mentorship as the team grows
- Drive innovation at the intersection of climate tech, materials science, and hardware systems
Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience with CAD, electronics, mechanical assembly, and fast prototyping
- Solid understanding of electrical engineering and circuit design
- Experience with embedded systems and firmware for physical hardware
- Familiarity with control systems (PID, automation, or PLCs)
- Comfortable working independently on complex technical projects in a fast-paced lab environment
- Prior experience at an early-stage startup or high-agency projects
Nice to Haves
- Experience designing and testing high-voltage systems (10kV )
- Background in building or scaling automation or custom hardware platforms
- Knowledge of FPGAs, RTOS, or high-speed data acquisition systems
- Familiarity with electrospinning or nanomaterials
- Experience leading engineering teams or mentoring other engineers
