What are the responsibilities and job description for the Machine Operator (Bindery) position at BJU Press?
SUMMARY: Our Bindery Machine Operator is a critical part of a team that produces books, and related products used in the Christian education of students from Pre-K through 12th Grade. This individual is responsible for the set-up, operation, and maintenance of various finishing and bindery machines such as, but not limited to, large straight knife cutters, folders, stitcher, and mechanical binders while maintaining optimum quality and production.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Learn to understand job ticket/work order verifying correct trim, signature format, fold patterns, and bind type.
- Program (set up) and run jobs on cutter, folder, or binders, according to job specifications.
- Follow shop schedule or supervisors’ direction in prioritizing daily tasks.
- Record all activities in shop data collection system.
- Perform knife changes, regular and preventive maintenance, as well as troubleshooting and repairs on equipment as needed.
- Properly load, identify, and stage product prior to, during, and after completion.
- Maintain a safe and orderly working environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong analytical, mechanical, and trouble-shooting skill sets. Must have good visual acuity and manual dexterity.
- Be familiar with various substrates, their grain, bulking, and performance characteristics.
- Must be dependable, have a solid work ethic, positive attitude, and a focus on consistent quality.
- Must be able to read, comprehend, and follow written as well as verbal instructions.
- Strong communication and above average interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Strong math and basic level computer skills
- Ability to work shifts regularly and overtime as needed.
- One year of manufacturing or related experience.
