Entry-Level Position Available (Summer 2025)
Title: Preconstruction Engineer Intern
Reports to: Preconstruction Manager
Summary of Position: As a key team member, the Preconstruction Engineer Intern is responsible for working with the Preconstruction team and project teams to ensure the successful execution of the preconstruction stage of projects. During preconstruction, the Blach Preconstruction team leads the effort to set the project up for success during the construction phase, including cost estimating services (value engineering, cost studies, subcontractor procurement) and pre-planning services (constructability reviews, coordination with Blach’s in-house MEP, VD&C, Self-Perform, and Quality teams, and collaboration with the construction project team on early procurement, schedule, phasing, logistics etc). The Preconstruction Engineer Intern will work under the guidance of Blach’s Core Values and provide excellent customer service to all parties involved in the successful execution of Company projects.
Typical Duties:
- Assist the team in performing quantity take-offs and evaluating drawings, specifications, and related documents
- Develop knowledge and awareness of the factors that affect construction costs through work on cost estimates
- Assist with final assembly of estimates for presentation to Owners
- Reach out to subcontractor partners for market input on estimates and cost studies
- Assist in value engineering and cost study efforts
- Prepare Bid Documents for both budgeting exercises and procurement. Assist the team with subcontractor outreach
- Assist the team in scope statement creation, proposal reviews, and post-bid interviews
- Gain an understanding of construction means and methods, sequences, and techniques
- Coordinate constructability reviews and all Blach participants (Superintendent, Quality Manager, Self-Perform, MEP), ensuring deliverables and deadlines are met
- Attend job walks
- Build strong relationships in the subcontractor community
- Participate in project preconstruction meetings as well as internal preconstruction team meetings
- Grow your knowledge in the latest estimating and construction technology, including: Construct Connect, Destini, Togul.ai, Building Connected, Autodesk Build, Bluebeam and Microsoft Excel
Location: Northern California (Bay Area)
Position Status: Summer intern, regular business hours (40 hours a week), non-exempt
