BFDI is a CARF accredited, licensed, comprehensive human services organization committed to serving all persons, while specializing in evidence-based counseling, treatment, and advocacy for persons of color. Agency programming includes early childhood resources and literacy development, a 3-tiered juvenile justice service array, mental health prevention and treatment, substance use disorder prevention and treatment, boys and young men of color supportive resources, school-based intervention, and trauma-informed care. Our organization is seeking a Full-time Family Connections Counselor with the corresponding experience requirements:
Salary: $55,000
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides for the delivery of effective child abuse and prevention services that are consistent with contract requirements and service activities; utilizes a family focused/centered delivery of services; advocates for the families to ensure that their needs and their children’s needs are met and that services are culturally competent, individualized, family centered and strength based; ensures increased opportunities for healthy social, emotional, physical and cognitive development; ensures youth, family and community safety, and the integrity of Family Connections model.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Provides individual, family, and group treatment to children and families.
§ Provides families with counseling services that encourage the development of linkages with natural helping networks and community resources.
§ Teaches appropriate communication skills, discipline, and anger management techniques.
§ Helps families improve family functioning and parenting skills.
§ Helps increase child safety among at risk families by building family specific protective factors.
§ Helps improve the well-being of at risk children, as indicated by improvement in their behavior and functioning.
§ Helps increase protective factors among at-risk families, as evident by parental attitude toward change, parental confidence, and social support.
§ Advocates for the consumers to assure that their needs are met to ensure stability.
§ Advocates for the inclusion of extended family, neighbors or friends wherever possible to assist in the child’s care plan.
§ Responsible for developing and/or maintaining contacts and viable linkages with community resources for the family i.e. recreational, education, parent education, health and other services as appropriate.
§ Responsible for receiving consumer suggestions and forwarding them to the Quality Assurance Committee.
§ Ensures that all case file documentation is current and done in the time frame required by policy.
§ Maintains documentation in compliance with all applicable policies.
§ Works cooperatively with treatment and evaluation team.
§ Participates in weekly supervision and case consultation.
§ Completes, via computer, all information system required record keeping forms accurately and within the prescribed time frame.
§ Works closely with families and provides comprehensive services to the family.
§ Protects the confidentiality of the child and family.
§ Attends all model trainings, team meetings, and case consultations with program staff and management.
§ Attends staff meetings, trainings, workshops, and conferences.
§ Ability to work a flexible work schedule as needed.
§ Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in social work, sociology, psychology or guidance and counseling; experience working in child abuse and neglect, family preservation, prevention, and case management; experience in family counseling; must have strong leadership and collaboration skills; understanding of working within the environment in which the child grows, develops, and functions; ability to provide service that matches a family’s language, culture and spiritual beliefs and affirms the value of the family; knowledge and skills in assessment of potentially violent situations; must be computer proficient in both word processing and database software programs; working knowledge of confidentiality policy and procedure; flexible work schedule that allows for extensive client access to workers (accessible 24 hour/seven day week); valid Michigan drivers license and current automobile insurance.
