POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Black Hawk Area Special Education District is seeking a passionate and experienced
Behavior Coach to support students with challenging behaviors from PreK to age 22. This position plays a key role in providing direct behavioral support to students while working collaboratively with educators, administrators, and other professionals to create an inclusive and effective learning environment. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in working with students who have behavioral challenges, strong communication skills, and the ability to lead and guide educators in implementing behavior management strategies.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide direct behavior support to students with challenging behaviors, from PreK to age 22, within the Black Hawk Area Special Education District and its member districts.
- Collaborate closely with the special education cooperative, teachers, administrators, and other educational staff to design and implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) tailored to the needs of students.
- Conduct functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and data analysis to inform behavior
interventions and track student progress.
- Offer guidance, training, and professional development to teachers and staff regarding
effective behavior management techniques and strategies for students with diverse needs.
- Monitor the implementation of behavioral strategies, ensuring fidelity and effectiveness across various educational settings.
- Foster positive relationships with students, staff, and families to support behavioral
growth and development.
- Assist in crisis intervention (CPI or other identified district procedure ONLY when others are unavailable).
- Work with staff on using de-escalation techniques and maintaining a safe and supportive environment.
- Provide resources and support to member districts to ensure a cohesive approach to
behavior management and student success.
- Maintain accurate documentation of interventions, progress, and any behavioral
incidents, in compliance with district policies and regulations.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of Individualized
Education Plans (IEPs) for students with behavioral needs.

- High level of organization and attention to detail.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working with students who have challenging
behaviors, preferably in a school or special education setting.
- Proven success in working collaboratively with schools, educational teams, and families
to address behavioral concerns and achieve positive student outcomes.
- Strong knowledge of behavioral management theories and practices, including functional behavior assessments (FBAs), behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and data-driven decision-making.
- Experience providing training and support to teachers, staff, and administrators on
behavior management techniques.
- Ability to develop and implement individualized, evidence-based strategies to meet the
behavioral needs of students.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive
working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
- Experience with special education processes and knowledge of legal requirements and
regulations regarding students with disabilities.
- A bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is
required; a master's degree or certification in behavior analysis is preferred.
- Certification or training in behavior management or therapeutic crisis intervention
strategies is highly desirable.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
- Must hold a valid and current Illinois PEL
- Certificate or Licensure in Special Education: LBS1, School Psychologist, Behavior
Interventionist, or School Social Work
