We are seeking qualified candidates for Engineering Technician I, II, or III positions. These roles support the Road Department in the design, testing, implementation, and maintenance of infrastructure, construction, or technical projects. A job offer and placement in a level I, II or III Engineering Technician will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and skill level.

- CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ALL I, II AND III)
- Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks
- Performs computerized drafting (CAD), and project development necessary for project design, and calculation of bid item project quantities.
- Performs tests on concrete, checks mat temperature and yield on asphalt projects, performs gradations, witnesses and/or collects samples of construction materials.
- Measures distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of layout and installations. Verifies levels, alignment and elevations, of installations using total station, GPS and level.
- Interprets construction plans and specifications to ensure project is built to conformance.
- Maintains daily logs of construction inspection activities and compiles progress reports and observes work in progress to ensure procedures are followed and that materials used conform to specifications.
- Obtains field data necessary for design and maintenance of roadway, bridges, water resources, site development, boundary surveying and other items.
- Other duties as assigned
- Technician II and III :
- Performs duties of the Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) plant inspector including review of plant reports; monitor collection of aggregate belt samples and asphalt cement samples, perform aggregate monitor gradations, verify mix temperatures, and verify aggregate moisture content.
- Performs duties of the Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) plant inspector including reviewing plant reports, performing aggregate monitor gradations and testing field concrete samples.
- Technician III :
- Supports the Engineering Technician I & II by providing technical knowledge and training as it pertains to project design and inspection.
- Performs construction and material audits for State and Federal Aid construction projects. Including compiling information, coordinating with other technicians and engineering staff and reviewing final documentation with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Technician I:- Associate’s degree (A.S/A.A.S.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school in Construction Engineering Technology or other related field, 6 months of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction preferred. OR Certificate in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent from one-year technical school in engineering, surveying or construction and at least 1 year of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction. OR A high school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction.
- Must have valid Iowa Driver's License and be insurable under the county’s guidelines.
- Must obtain an Iowa DOT Certified Technician certificate for PCC I, Aggregate Technician, and HMA Sampler within one year of employment with the Road Department and must continue to keep them current.
- Must have a basic knowledge and ability to operate Autodesk Civil 3D computerized drafting software.
- Must be proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
- Associate’s degree (A.S/A.A.S.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school in Construction Engineering Technology or other related field and at least 2 years of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction. OR Certificate in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent from one-year technical school in engineering, surveying or construction and at least 3 years of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction. OR A high school diploma or GED and at least 5 years of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction.
- Must have valid Iowa Driver's License and be insurable under the county’s guidelines.
- Must obtain an Iowa DOT Certified Technician certificate for PCC I, PCC II, Aggregate Technician, and HMA I within one year of employment with the Road Department and must continue to keep them current.
- Must be proficient Autodesk Civil 3D computerized drafting software.
- Must have general working knowledge of roadway construction and design.
- Must have general knowledge of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) construction specifications and design standards.
- Must be proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
- Associate’s degree (A.S/A.A.S.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school in Construction Engineering Technology or other related field, and at least 5 years of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction. OR Certificate in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent from one-year technical school in engineering, surveying or construction and at least 6 years of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction. OR A high school diploma or GED and at least 8 years of experience and/or training in engineering; surveying or construction.
- Must have a valid Iowa driver's license and be insurable under the County's insurance guidelines.
- Must obtain an Iowa DOT Certified Technician certificate for PCC I, PCC II, Aggregate Technician, HMA I within one year after employment with the Road Department and must continue to keep them current.
- Must have advanced knowledge and ability to operate Autodesk Civil 3D computerized drafting software.
- Must have general working knowledge of roadway, bridge and culvert construction and design.
- Must have advanced knowledge of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) construction specifications and design standards
- Must be proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
