COTA, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

Position Summary :
Under the direction and supervision of our Occupational Therapist, the COTA, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, assists in completing the occupational therapy services for adults with intellectual developmental disabilities so that they may participate fully in their life activities. This includes everything that helps people overcome physical, emotional and social challenges.
This position also looks for an understanding of the use of assistive technology or assistive equipment that may enhance the quality and independence of their life. They may be involved in researching, developing and implementing technology to support participants while working collaboratively with the Assistive Technology Coordinator and the participant’s team.
In addition to working as a team, they need to demonstrate excellent problem-solving, decision-making and organizational skills. They are responsible for monitoring activities and recording progress and providing feedback to the team and the Occupational Therapist so that the therapist can modify the plan as needed.
Education and Experience :
- Certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from an accredited college is preferred. Experience may be substituted for the certification, depending on its length and scope.
- Experience in working with individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities is plus.
Requirements :

Ability to physically support a participant with daily routines and equipment.Ability to push a person in their wheelchair, if neededDuties / Responsibilities :
Work with the Occupational Therapist, the Assistive Technology Coordinator and the team of interdisciplinary professionals in carrying out the individual support plan for participants needing occupational therapy services.Provide support to help participants meet their goals and safely participate in their daily routines such as cooking, or self-care activities such as bathing or getting dressed, cleaning, shopping, working, volunteering and moving about their home and their community according to the OT’s assessment and direction.Adapt or modify instructional materials and / or equipment as determined by people’s needs and abilities.Document supports and services in the various computer platforms as required.Work with the Assistive Technology Coordinator in the research, development and implementation of a wide variety of technologies.Request assistive technology funds for qualifying equipment.Demonstrate strong leadership skills by practicing direct communication, creating transparency, building collaborative relationships within and across service areas, and providing a clear vision for innovation in our company.Ensure that the implementation of occupational therapy strategies and technologies aligns with the company missions / vision / value statements, person centered thinking philosophies, and requirements set forth by our accreditors and regulating bodies.Provide information and training on occupational therapies and equipment to the direct support professionals, as needed.Conduct group training sessions / classes that enhance accomplishing everyday tasks, promote coordination, socialization and improve functional abilities.Recommend changes needed to the Occupational Therapist or Assistive Technology Coordinator as needed.Black Hills Works is an equal opportunity employer and will consider all qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
