POSITION Title : SPECIAL GRANT RESEARCH PROJECT CONSULTANT

POSITION TYPE & DURATION : Consultant (Contractor); Full-time; 6-10 Months

LOCATION : FullyRemote; Within contiguous United States. Preferably within the

Washington DC / Metro area. Must be available between the hours of

9 : 00a – 6 : 00p EST.

RATE : $17,500 per month (30 hours per week)

The Project : “Empowering Health and Sustainability : Integrating Black-Owned Solar Solutions in the Healthcare Sector” . Funded by a generous planning grant from the Kresge Foundation , the research will explore the integration of Black-owned solar energy solutions into the healthcare sector to improve energy resilience, sustainability, and equitable access to clean power. The research will focus on the challenges faced by (essential) hospitals serving BIPOC communities.

Position Overview

B.O.S.S. is seeking a subject matter expert in clean energy, healthcare sustainability solutions, and economic empowerment to serve as the Special Grant Research Project Consultant for the Project. In this role, the Consultant will be solely responsible for conducting all research and analysis, engaging stakeholders, completing comprehensive reports, and developing strategic recommendations for policy and market integration. The Consultant will start by establishing institutional relationships with America’s Essential Hospitals and Health Care Without Harm. The goal is to increase B.O.S.S.’ capacity to work alongside hospitals / health systems to build out an infrastructure of renewable generation and sustainable building performance / energy efficiency reduce power outages and operating costs.

Top Priorities include (but are not limited to) :

  • Establishing institutional relationships through Initiating meetings and discussions with America’s Essential Hospitals and other key stakeholders.
  • Conducting a comprehensive needs assessment of target hospitals.
  • Analyzing policy, regulatory, and financial frameworks supporting solar adoption in healthcare.
  • Developing a renewable energy integration plan in collaboration with B.O.S.S. members and networks to design tailored renewable energy solutions for hospitals.
  • Providing technical and operational guidance on integrating solar infrastructure.
  • Developing a framework for measuring impact, including energy cost savings, carbon reductions, and improved healthcare access.
  • Creating compelling narratives and case studies showcasing the impact of Black-owned solar solutions in healthcare.
  • Identifying state, federal, and local policies that impact solar deployment in healthcare settings.
  • Analyzing financing mechanisms, incentives, and grant opportunities available for clean energy in healthcare.
  • Compiling comprehensive reports on project outcomes and lessons learned.
  • Drafting an implementation plan for integrating health components and prepare for implementation of the pilot in Phase 2.

The ideal candidate will possess the following MINIMUM qualifications :

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Public Health, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Energy Policy, Business, or a related field.
  • 8-10 years of experience in clean energy, healthcare sustainability solutions, and economic empowerment with a focus on clean energy or related sectors.
  • 5 years of experience in grant writing, research, or consulting, preferably in healthcare, renewable energy, or nonprofit sectors.
  • Understanding of healthcare facility operations, infrastructure sustainability challenges and the role of solar energy in improving access, resilience, and cost savings.
  • Familiarity with clean energy policies, sustainability initiatives, and equitable energy access for underrepresented communities.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented strategic thinker with the ability to “jump right in”.
  • Experience working within Black-owned business ecosystems, healthcare institutions, and community stakeholders to drive inclusive solutions.
  • Awareness of, and commitment to removing the critical social challenges including health disparities for BIPOC, lack of investment and resources in local or essential hospitals, climate change, and energy infrastructure.
  • Expertise in renewable energy, healthcare sustainability, particularly solar solutions and energy resilience.
  • Proficiency in program evaluation, data collection, and reporting for sustainability and healthcare initiatives.
  • Proven experience in research / analysis, stakeholder engagement, and market analysis.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with cross-sector stakeholders.
  • Ability to build relationships with funders, policymakers, healthcare leaders, and solar energy entrepreneurs.
  • Exceptional research, writing, presentation, and storytelling skills to effectively communicate the impact of integrating solar solutions in healthcare.
  • Grant compliance and reporting expertise, ensuring funds are utilized effectively.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy financing mechanisms and public-private partnerships.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Advanced-level proficiency with solid, measurable experience in a variety of data analysis tools, grants portals, database software applications, social media platforms ( REQUIRED : Salesforce / Raiser’s Edge / Network for Good, or other CRM; Gmail / Google Docs / Google Workspace; Microsoft 365; MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, Social Media apps).
  • Full fluency in written and oral English (Required); Bi-lingual (English / Spanish) highly desirable.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the US (Required); Ability to travel throughout the contiguous 48 states as necessary.
