Job Description: Apprentice Wood Furniture Finisher
Position Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join our workshop as an Apprentice Wood Furniture Finisher. Under the guidance of an experienced craftsman, you will learn the art and science of wood finishing, gaining hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of professional techniques and tools. This role offers a unique opportunity to build a lifelong skill in a highly specialized craft.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Spray Application Techniques:
Learn to use HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) and air-assisted airless spray guns for even and precise application.
Practice proper setup, operation, and maintenance of spray equipment.
Understand the importance of spray patterns, overlap, and material viscosity for consistent finishes.
2. Color Matching and Application:
Develop skills to accurately match colors using a variety of techniques.
Work with dyes, stains, and glazes to achieve desired tones and effects.
Learn to layer and blend finishes to enhance the natural beauty of the wood.
3. Clear Topcoats:
Gain knowledge about different types of topcoats, including lacquer, 2K polyurethanes, and acrylic polyurethanes.
Master the application process to achieve a smooth, durable, and professional finish.
Understand the curing and drying processes to ensure optimal results.
4. Daily Challenges and Problem-Solving:
Address common finishing challenges, such as adhesion issues, blotching, or uneven coloration.
Learn to identify and correct imperfections like runs, drips, or sanding marks.
Adapt to unique and unexpected project requirements, developing a problem-solving mindset.
Heavy lifting at times of over 150 #’s. Exposure to solvent and chemicals. Clear visual acuity and color recognition.
5. Workplace Best Practices:
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
Understand and adhere to all safety guidelines for handling chemicals and equipment.
Build a solid foundation of time management, efficiency, and precision.
Qualifications:
A passion for craftsmanship and a keen eye for detail.
Willingness to learn and take direction from an experienced mentor.
Strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.
Ability to work with your hands, and comfort handling tools and equipment.
Basic knowledge of woodworking is a plus but not required.
