Job Summary: The Blackfeet Fish and Wildlife Department is seeking a fish biologist to work directly with the Fisheries Program Manager. The fisheries program consists of recreational and conservation fisheries. The Fish Biologist will conduct research, monitor populations, and implement strategies to promote the health and sustainability. This position involves fieldwork, data analysis, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to achieve conservation and recreation goals.


Duties:

-Research and Monitoring: native species conservation and restoration along with recreational fisheries monitoring and enhancement.

-Data Analysis and Reporting: Entry, analysis, and report preparation for various grants and funding sources.

-Fieldwork: Electrofishing surveys, genetic sampling, netting, fish salvage, seining, spawning surveys, aquatic invasive species suppression and monitoring, and other fish-related monitoring and sampling activities.

-Presentations and education: Presentations to youth and interest groups.


Qualifications:

-Must pass a physical examination that determines the incumbent is physically and mentally capable of performing the essential duties of the position without hazard to self or others.

-MT Driver's license.

-Must have High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

-Must have no previous convictions on drug-related charges.

-Bachelor’s degree or higher in wildlife and Fisheries, Natural Resources, or Environmental Science.

-Must be able to work independently in a professional manner.

-Must pass a drug test.

Required:

-Must be familiar with the Blackfeet Fish and Wildlife Code.

-Must have knowledge of the use of topographic maps, aerial photos, GPS, and compass.

-Knowledgeable about native and non-native fish identification.

-Knowledge or familiarity with fisheries management techniques is preferred

-General outdoor skills.

-Incumbent must have good communication skills, including good public relations -Skills and the ability to write reports and apply for grants

-Knowledgeable about budgeting and buying equipment

-Incumbents must be physically able to operate and properly maintain off-roading vehicles and boats.

-Must be experienced with working outdoors under adverse weather conditions through streams and rough mountainous terrain.

-May require longer days when in the field.


Supervisory controls:

The Incumbent is under the direct supervision of the fisheries program manager and BFWD Director. Incumbent is expected to have the ability to work independently in a professional manner exercising sound judgment.


Demands:

Much of this work will be done in the field, traversing steep terrain for long distances daily, sometimes in inclement weather. The incumbent is expected to enforce regulations in the Blackfeet Fish & Wildlife Code. Heavy work, such as lifting and moving large, heavy objects will occur. The incumbent will be expected to provide his/her own transportation to Browning. The incumbent must be able to work well with other people and agencies while representing the Tribe in a professional manner.
