Position Overview

The Program Leader will serve as a key leader for after-school Scouting programs in the Blackhawk Area Council. A Program Leader will engage Scouts in active and imaginative activities and lead Scouting activities for Cub Scouts (youth ages 5-10) and/or Scouts BSA (youth ages 11-18). Program Leaders will serve unit locations each week in an After School format; Monday – Friday and work occasional weekends. In conjunction with our partner organization, Program Leaders will work directly with our youth members to teach them life skills including physical fitness, environmental conservation, active citizenship, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) awareness. Program Leaders need to be self-starters, self-motivated, be able to work independently and have a desire for community involvement.
A passion for helping young people develop into responsible adults, and a high comfort-level for working directly with children are essential skills for this position.
Responsibilities Include:
· The effective operation and supervision of the Scouting program within selected schools.
· Wear a Scout uniform shirt or staff shirt at all meetings and activities involving youth. (to be provided).
· Learn weekly program content & deliver that content to our youth members.
· Commit to a weekly schedule of program from the months of September-May.
· Work in a team-setting with other program aides.
· Review and prepare for existing weekly program planning including gathering materials and outlines.
· Complete all mandatory weekly reporting including membership applications, attendance, advancement, service hours, activity attendance and camp registration data entry in a timely manner.
· Participate in program meetings and training sessions – (weekly, monthly and / or bi-monthly).
· Attend Scouting events and activities as assigned by your Staff Leader.
· Execute a quality program at each assigned unit to ensure that every youth participant will earn a minimum of one rank advancement each program year.
· Help in the completion of the unit / individual renewal paperwork on time for each of your units under the direction of the professional staff.
· Participate in all open houses (or similar school / site events / opportunities) to promote scouting, recruit and register youth.
· Promote and participate in District and Council fundraising efforts with each of your Scout units, including but not limited to selling popcorn, camp cards and supporting the Council’s Friends of Scouting campaign.
Additional Qualifications:
· High School Diploma
· Must be 21
· Youth-oriented, having the ability to work well with children
· Should be organized, self-motivated and a team player
· Must live locally & be able to arrange transportation to and from program locations
· Scouting experience a plus
· Available each week in the afternoons.
· Other qualities include time management, communication, leadership, self-starter, works well with peers, good work ethic, goal orientation, has some vision, forward thinking, energetic, well spoken, some writing and computer skills, good listener, lives by the Scout Oath & Law
