Description

Blackhawk Country Club will be the premier full-service club in the East Bay, where members gather as a community and create lifelong connections through exceptional experiences in an incomparably beautiful setting.

As a member of the Blackhawk Country Club leadership team, you play an integral role in executing toward our Club’s Vision and Strategic Plan. You will be expected to lead by example, using the language, behaviors, and attitude that we teach with our HAWKS CODE. In addition to your job-specific duties, you will contribute to Blackhawk Country Club being an employer of choice, maintaining best-in-market marketing and sales efforts, improving member experience with outstanding programming and services, and implementing investment plans into our world-class facility.

Position Summary

Leading the Club's finance, accounting, and IT functions, the role will play an integral part as a strategic thought partner to a well-respected COO and GM and the Club's Board of Directors. The role is responsible for overseeing and ensuring accurate and timely reporting on operations and capital investment, budget development and management, cash flow and forecasting analysis, internal controls, annual 3rd party audit, insurance and risk management, banking and treasury, and tax compliance.

The Chief Financial Officer has overall managerial responsibility for the Finance/Accounting Team including the Controller, Senior Accounting Supervisor, two Staff Accountants and an Accounting Reception position.

As an integral part of the Executive Leadership Team, the Chief Financial Officer serves as the management liaison for the Finance Committee and attends regularly scheduled Board of Director meetings and Membership Committee meetings. This position serves as administrative liaison to all departments and their department directors and managers and develops quarterly presentations and financial communications to 4,500 plus members.

The position will also be involved with the Club's Strategic Planning Committee to provide input and insights to Annual Strategic Plans and Facility Master Planning to assist in ensuring the Club's amenities and programming are relevant for years to come.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Executive Leadership Team support to COO and GM for input and execution of Strategic Plans, Employee and Member Action Plans, execution and monitoring of initiatives, industry best practices, Club policies and procedures including Hawk’s Code.
  • An engaged leader supervising all financial operations and analysis, delivering timely, accurate, and consistent financial and capital reporting, and periodic special reporting for the Leadership Team and Board of Directors.
  • Attends regularly scheduled Finance Committee, Membership and Marketing Committee, and Board of Directors’ meetings as a financial thought partner.
  • Provides input and insights to the Strategic Planning Committee; Annual Strategic Plans and Master Facility Planning and participates on Capital Strategic Planning Subcommittee.
  • Develops quarterly financial communications and presentations for in-person and electronic communication to a large membership (4,500 plus).
  • Develops and manages execution of Finance department annual business plan.
  • Administrative liaison – works side-by-side with and supports Leadership Team and all departments’ directors and managers with relevant data and processes.
  • Instrumental in identifying and recommending projects, equipment, tools, and funding requirements for Club’s I.T. function in conjunction with Executive Management Team and manages technology investments.
  • Reviews and analyzes actual and projected financial variances and works closely with Leadership Team to conduct research, identify trends, and develop appropriate action plans to enhance or mitigate as necessary.
  • Directly manages, supports, and monitors the day-to-day activities and performance of the Controller ensuring quality control and sound operational procedures.
  • Coordinates relevant, structured, and transparent processes and data-driven analysis.
  • Works with the Leadership Team and Finance/Accounting Team to develop strategies, policies, and procedures for best management practices, and to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participates professionally at Finance Committee and Board meetings, providing input, management recommendations and absorbing feedback.
  • Leads the development, supervises, and monitors the annual budget and forecasting processes.
  • Collaborates and coaches with the Leadership Team and department managers to promote understanding, accountability and buy-in for realistic budget targets that align with the Club’s vision and strategic plans.
  • Leads the development, implementation, and monitoring of financial policies and procedures for effective internal control over receipts and disbursements and correct allocation in the accounting system.
  • Proactively seeks to innovate for improvement in efficiency and productivity while still bolstering the membership experience.
  • Coordinates periodic capital reserve studies for accurate capital asset footprint valuation.
  • Provides coaching and professional development opportunities for Finance/Accounting Team.
  • Intervenes and negotiates with problematic delinquent accounts receivable cases for payment.
  • Primary Club liaison with insurers and external auditors for risk management, compliant audit and tax filings and to facilitate annual audit processes. Develops action plans for any audit findings.
  • Primary Club liaison with financial institutions to supervise and monitor banking, treasury, and debt needs and compliance and is an authorized signatory for Club bank accounts.
  • Creates and sustains productive relationships with Committee Members, third party insurers, bankers, and other Club stakeholders, and nurtures a valued Club industry network.
  • Coordinates and monitors inputs to and comparative reporting for benchmarking analysis with local area and national large private clubs with a “dashboard” and KPI/metric focus.
  • Intervenes and assists as required for member code of conduct violations.
  • Periodically attends Club industry and financial education, networking and conference opportunities for accounting and Club trend awareness and benchmarking.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university with a concentration in Finance, Accounting or Business
  • 7-10 years of professional finance/accounting experience with 3 years at a Controller level
  • 7-10 years of experience in the hospitality field, preferably in a large member-owned private club environment
  • CPA or CHAE preferred
  • Preference to individuals involved in the CMAA with career aspirations to be a Certified Club Manager (CCM)
  • Experience with 501c7 non-profits
  • Proficiency in club data management software for finance and accounting; ClubEssential an asset
  • Experience with construction and renovation projects
  • Demonstrated strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Has an “executive presence” and strong presentation skills
  • Team-oriented and able to meet deadlines
  • Trustworthy and results driven with a strong business acumen and high level of integrity
  • Charismatic, influential leadership with the ability to mentor, lead, and develop others

  • Stamina: Periodically the role may involve reasonable extended hours during peak business periods or isolated special events.

  • Indoor/Outdoor Setting: The majority of work is performed indoors in an office or meeting room setting.
