What are the responsibilities and job description for the Greenskeeper - Full Time position at Blacksburg, Town of (VA)?
The Greenskeeper performs semiskilled work in the maintenance and repair of The Hill golf course and related facilities, and performs other related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent.
Shift: Monday - Friday, some weekends may be required.

- Mows and trims greens, tees, fairways and rough with varying types of equipment
- Waters, seeds, fertilizes, aerates, and chemically treats greens, tees, and fairways
- Maintains and repairs irrigation system; maps irrigation system, repairs electrical and computer control systems
- Repairs and replaces broken water pipes
- Clears brush and wooded areas; hauls sand, mulch, and debris
- Removes, cuts, trims, and transplants trees
- Removes leaves, debris, and snow on course
- Plants and maintains flowers on property
- Rebuilds and maintains sand traps
- Works on construction and maintenance projects which include operating various types of equipment
- Assists with maintenance of all golf course equipment
- Repaints all markers and signs
- Fills in for coverage at the pro shop when needed
- General knowledge of lawn care to include maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways
- General carpentry skills required during construction/maintenance projects
- Ability to operate several types of equipment to include mowers, front end loaders, back hoes, trenches, box graders, etc. in a safe manner
- Mechanical ability to assist with the upkeep of the golf course equipment
- Ability to work in various weather conditions
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED certification required and minimal experience in the performance of grounds maintenance and repair work, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements:
Possession of Virginia Pesticide Applicator certification within six months of hire
Valid Commercial Driver's License in the Commonwealth of Virginia or ability to obtain within six months
Valid VA Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force
- Work frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions
- Work has standard vision requirements
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
- Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
- Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration
- Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)
