The Maintenance Specialist III- Concrete for the Streets division performs skilled trades work operating a variety of heavy equipment in order to install, maintain, and concrete infrastructure in the Town, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Streets - Sidewalk Foreman and indirect supervision of the Streets - Superintendent.
Shift:
Spring/Summer Shift:
[April 1st - September 1st] Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm
Fall/Winter Shift:
[September 2nd - March 31st] Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

- Serves as supervisor in the absence of the Foreman
- On call for after hour emergencies
- Performs manual labor for concrete construction and finishing
- Performs maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment
- General labor and carpentry using hand tools and small equipment
- Asphalt paving and repairs as required
- Storm/sewer drain installation and maintenance as required
- Dump truck and snow play operation
- Skills in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment
- Thorough knowledge of VDOT work zone requirements
- General knowledge of street maintenance and construction practices
- General knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
- General knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of equipment
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public
- Ability to place and finish concrete
- Skills in the use of various hand tools and construction equipment
- Ability to safely work in and around the roadway
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public and other employees
- High school diploma or GED required
- Seven to ten years of experience with heavy equipment
- Knowledge of standard construction practices and principles
- Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
- Position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and will be included in the random drug and alcohol screening program
- Satisfactory driving record
- Regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force
- Frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force
- Regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions
