Position Summary :
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Hemodialysis Technician - Full Time Evenings 2 : 30PM-12 : 30AM; rotating schedule / weekends - Outpatient.
In this role, the successful candidate Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, assists the dialysis nursing staff in providing a safe and efficient dialysis treatment for each patient. Operates and maintains safe functioning of dialysis machines and other ancillary patient care equipment. Operates and maintains safe functioning of both the reverse osmosis and the bicarbonate systems. Stocks supplies needed in the patient care area.
Participates in educational / professional development to improve job knowledge. Participates in the performance improvement projects.
Job Responsibilities :
1. ASSISTS IN PROVISION OF safe and efficient HEMODIALYSIS
- Ensures safe and efficient operation of the R / O by checking and recording all required parameters
- Ensures the safe and efficient functioning of the hemodialysis machine by checking and recording all required parameters
- Ensures the safe and efficient functioning of each dialysis circuit and dialyzer by checking and recording all required parameters.
- Ensures that all machine parameters and dialysate concentrate used are all set according to the MD orders
- Maintains strict adherence to standard precautions as per hospital policy, ie : wears fluid resistant gowns, face shield and gloves, etc.
- Maintains strict adherence to infection control policies and procedures to prevent transmission of blood-borne disease within the unit
- Ensures accurate vital signs on each patient prior to, during and post dialysis
- Ensures safe fistula and A-V graft cannulation
- Ensures that all blood work is obtained as ordered with patient identifiers.
- Ensures safe initiation of, monitoring of and termination of each dialysis treatment and records all required parameters
- Ensures adequate cleaning of each machine, patient supplies and patient care area between treatments
- Reports all unusual findings and problems with both patients and machines to the registered nurse immediately 2. SAFELY OPERATES HEMODIALYSIS MACHINES, ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT AND THE R / O AND BICARBONATE SYSTEMS
- Initiates monitoring the R / O prior to use daily by checking and recording the parameters required on the R. / O log sheet.
- Repeats the chloramine test at or prior to each new patient shift.
- Reports any out of range R / O parameters to the Chief Technician or to the Nurse Manager immediately and completes action plan.
- Initiates use of the deionization system if R / O is down
- Initiates use of Bicart columns
- Checks and records dialysis machine temperature, conductivity, pH, prior to each treatment to ensure accurate machine calibration. Checks each machine used for these parameters with an independent meter prior to each patient treatment.
- Checks each machine for safe function of the waste handling option prior to each treatment
- Checks and records the function of the oxygen generators daily
- Checks and records the function of the independent conductivity meters daily
- Checks and records the temperature of the specimen refrigerator in the unit daily
- Cleans all ancillary equipment after each use or if visibly soiled as needed. 3. MAINTAINS AND STOCKS SUPPLIES
- Maintains an adequate amount of all supplies needed for dialysis in each patient care pod in a neat well-organized manner
- Prepares dialysis initiation and termination packets for each patient
- Obtains supplies needed by the nurse from storeroom if necessary
- Reports problems with supplies to the Chief Dialysis Technician or the Nurse Manager 4. Participates in educational / professional development to improve job knowledge.
- Attends at least 5 staff meetings per years or reads all minutes of meetings and signs minutes sheet .
- Participates in the development of other staff members.
- Completes all annual mandatory education
- Uses professional organizations or dialysis journals / magazines as resources for updated information about dialysis practice
5. Participates in the unit goal of improving patient care
Minimum Qualifications :
To qualify you must have a High school diploma
Hemodialysis Technician Certification within 18 months of hire (CCHT preferred upon hire)
BLS Certification
Interpersonal skills
Ability to understand and assist with meeting the age specific needs of patients
Ability to learn multiple dialysis procedures and necessary infection control practices
Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 0 to 50 pounds.
Ability to move, walk and stand for approximately 90% of work time
At least one year of Hemodialysis experience preferred
Will be cross-trained to WMS and to the Acute Unit to meet the needs of the department.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Long Island Community Hospital provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $52,162.50 - $52,162.50 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses / incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
