Job Description:
The Digging Crew Apprentice is an entry level position that works under the guidance and supervision of an experienced crew member in the field to learn and develop the skills necessary for excavation and construction projects as assigned. The role involves assisting in various aspects of digging, trenching, and excavation activities to prepare job sites for construction, utilities installation, or other related projects. This position offers hands-on training and practical experience in the field of construction and excavation and reports to the Service Plumbing Supervisor in the Harrisonburg location.
Specific Job Duties:
- Comply with safety standards, policies and procedures
- Meet with the digging crew first thing to discuss the plan for the day
- Head to the jobsite and participate in relevant safety review/briefing
- Gather materials as needed to execute the day’s activities; prepare for digging, excavation, clear debris, mark boundaries, erect safety barriers as required
- Contribute to work efforts as directed by lead
- Follow proper techniques for digging trenches, excavating areas for foundations, utilities, and other structures according to project specifications and code
- Adhere with and ensure others follow prescribed safety standards, including use of appropriate PPE for the tasks
- Responsible to complete the Apprenticeship Qualification Standard (an in-house developed professional development pathway) in order to continue career progression
Education and Experience:
- High school or trade school graduate or GED
- Experience in construction or trades preferred, but not required
Physical Requirements:
- Physical fitness and ability to perform labor-intensive tasks in various weather conditions is a must based on the nature of the work
- Eager, willing to learn and follow instructions
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety
- Basic understanding of construction principles a plus but not required

Schedule:
- Five days/week Monday - Friday, 8 hour days
- Weekend and OT may be available based on project schedules
