Church Custodian

Job Overview

Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of our church buildings, rectory, Pastoral Center, & Cemetery, including regular cleaning of key areas like restrooms, floors, and common spaces, ensuring the facilities are presentable for liturgical services, meetings, and events, and sometimes assisting with setup and takedown of equipment for special functions; duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, window cleaning, and basic maintenance tasks, while prioritizing a safe and welcoming environment for parishioners.

Reports to the Parish Manager, Deacon George Nolan.

General Cleaning Duties:

· Sweeping and mopping floors

· Vacuuming floors, carpets and rugs

· Clean and sanitize restrooms

· Dust and wipe surfaces

· Empty trash and recycling bins

· Cleaning windows and glass surfaces

· Ensure that all areas are presentable and ready for use

· Assist with setting up and taking down equipment for events and activities

· Report maintenance or repair needs to the appropriate person

· Perform other duties as assigned

· Ensuring sidewalks and entrances are clear of debris, ice and snow. Contact snow removal vendors to clear sidewalks and parking lots if necessary.

Event Setup and Breakdown:

· Setting up chairs and tables for meetings and events

· Moving furniture as needed

· Assisting with AV equipment setup

Security and Safety:

· Locking and unlocking doors as needed

· Monitoring the building for potential security concerns

· Ensuring proper lighting is maintained

· Monthly check on emergency lights and fire extinguishers

Maintenance Tasks:

· Performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks as needed

· Checking and replenishing cleaning supplies

· Reporting any major maintenance issues to the Parish Manager

Skills & Requirements

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred

· Attention to detail and ability to maintain cleanliness standards

· Physical ability to perform cleaning tasks including bending, lifting, and reaching

· Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and equipment

· Ability to work independently and follow cleaning schedules

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team

· Strong attention to detail

· Good communication skills

· Ability to lift and move heavy objects

· Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as needed

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 per week
