About the Role:
The Scientist is responsible for developing and improving analytical methods of existing methods, for new products, new ingredients, and to support applicable regulatory requirements used in Blistex Inc.’s products from pilot scale to full-up production. He/she reviews and writes procedures and protocols, maintains records, tests products and reports on formulas and packaging. He/she also participates in and leads cross-functional teams (liaising at times with customers and suppliers), trains and coordinates the scheduling of lab techs, and stays abreast of current industry related trends.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Independently develops analytical methods for new products and new ingredients used in Blistex Inc.’s or competitors’ products.
- Independently develops analytical methods to support applicable regulatory requirements.
- Extensive hands-on experience with analytical instruments such as LC/MS, GC/MS, ICP/MS, UPLC, HPLC/UV-Vis/ELSD/RI/CAD, IC, and GC.
- Monitors the R&D stability studies and issues stability reports. Configures Stability Software users for R&D studies. Routinely flags negative stability trends to management.
- Trends Assay data and issues warnings.
- Maintain accurate and complete notebook records for all method developmental, validation, and investigational studies in accordance with SOPs and protocols.
- Writes and/or reviews procedures, protocols, summary reports and specification documents needed to support product development efforts.
- Plans, monitors, and performs chemical and physical testing on formulas and packaging components of stability samples.
- Participates on and/or leads cross functional teams within Quality and Research & Development for special projects
- Maintains all analytical instruments in proper condition, including the calibration of instruments on a pre-determined time interval.
- Conducts technical literature searches.
- Provides laboratory and instrument training to technicians and coordinates technicians work schedule, where appropriate.
- Leads and performs troubleshooting and provides a wide scope of expertise to Blistex business team regarding analytical matters.
- Explores and recommends new technologies, instruments, and materials, which may have application for the Blistex product line.
- Keeps abreast of current trends, practices, developments, and regulatory changes, which would impact Blistex Inc.’s products, procedures or packaging.
- Ensures the maintenance and/or adherence to good laboratory practices and all safety regulations.
- Creates, contributes and/or reviews Corporate SOPs and Departmental Guideline documents either independently or in conjunction with other departments.
- In conjunction with Manager, Analytical Development and Product Support, coordinates contract labs for required outside studies including writing/reviewing protocols, data, and reports.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or related scientific discipline with 5 to 7 years of applicable laboratory experience preferable in the cosmetics/pharmaceutical OTC industry.
- Experience with chromatographic (HPLC/GC) method development, validation, and transfer.
- A broad understanding of physical and chemical properties of chemicals, OSHA regulations, FDA regulations, USP, and cGMP with ability of adhering/complying to very disciplined scientific procedures.
- Proficient at effective communication skills for interactions with laboratory colleagues, project managers, and colleagues from numerous functional areas.
- Proficient with all analytical techniques used in the laboratory to be recognized as the testing and troubleshooting SME. Has a good understanding of the raw materials' physical and chemical properties and finished products to anticipate issues during the lifetime of various samples' testing cycles. Design studies for special studies such as material contact studies.
- Proficient at using all laboratory instrumentation and master the analytical chemistry principles behind the instrumentation to successfully troubleshoot instrumentation and technique. Use his/her expertise to support assay troubleshooting and look for continuous improvement opportunities/method improvements. Initiates new studies.
- Proficient with all laboratory and USP wet chemistry testing and master the analytical chemistry principles behind the testing to successfully troubleshoot testing and technique.
- Proficient use of such as software such as Empower, Mass Hunter, and Total Chrom.

- Proficient in all types of calculations required by the analytical methods, statistical analysis for experimental design, and compendial calculations. Proficient at interpretation of statistical data for investigation purposes.

Compensation
The annual salary for this position ranges from $95,000 to $105,000. Pay is based on a number of factors including job related knowledge, skills and experience. The job role is eligible for a discretionary bonus that may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
