Description
Summary: Assists in the development and implementation of an educational curriculum that meets NYSED standards for preschool and school age students with disabilities. Provides mentoring and training to educational staff; participates in the identification, evaluation and educational placement of students with disabilities.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Exercise discretion and judgment in decisions affecting business operations and finances.
- Maintain clear communication with supervisors and administration.
- Develop, oversee, and implement educational curricula for preschool students with disabilities.
- Mentor, train, and support educational staff in IEP development, classroom design, program implementation, and behavior management.
- Collaborate with the NYC Department of Education, NYS Education Department, and other regulatory bodies.
- Organize and oversee student review processes, including observations, summaries, and placement recommendations.
- Participate in recruiting, hiring, and evaluating educational staff, including performance corrections or terminations.
- Conduct professional development, parent training, and facilitate communication with families.
- Ensure compliance with SED and NYC DOE regulations and prepare for audits.
- Collaborate with health and clinical staff to integrate services effectively.
- Represent Block Institute at educational meetings, conferences, and events.
- Support staff meetings, team collaborations, and school-wide activities.
- Oversee documentation, quality assurance plans, and supply orders.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Children’s Services.
- Learn and master agency software systems and attend mandatory in-service training.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises all Teachers, Assistant Teachers, and Aides.
Essential Employee Policy
All Block Institute employees are designated as Essential Employees by New York State. During emergencies or crises, employees are required to fulfill their duties as mandated, unless otherwise directed by an Executive Order.
Responsibilities may include:
- Reporting in-person to designated worksites, even if other businesses are closed.
- Completing work remotely when possible, including documentation, evaluations, billing, and training modules.
- Attending virtual meetings via Microsoft Teams or other platforms.
- Performing any additional tasks or assignments as instructed.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- NYS Certification and master’s in special education.
- Must have 3–5 years of teaching and assessment experience in early childhood/elementary education.
- Administrative, supervisory, or mentoring experience.
- Experience with disabled preschool/school-age populations.
- Familiarity with SED regulations, DOE and DOH policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Physical Demands
- Capable of bending, kneeling, lifting, pushing, or transferring children as needed.
- May need to assist with children displaying challenging behaviors until relieved by designated staff.
Work Environment
- Primarily a school setting with occasional community outings or meetings.
- May require travel between education sites using public or private transportation in varying weather conditions.
