What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Principal / Special Education Coordinator position at Block Island School?
JOB DESCRIPTION:
To ensure the provision of a Free and Appropriate Public Education for children identified as disabled under IDEA. This is the director's responsibility.
In conjunction with the special Education Director, Responsible for the special education process from screening through identification, Individual Education Plan Development, and placement to ensure appropriate identification and placement of students with disabilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
●Rhode Island certified
●Ten years experience in special education teaching and/or student services
●Teacher Leadership experience preferred
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Including but not limited to:
1.Organize, Chair and ensure completion of all referrals, eligibility, evaluation reports and IEP’s.
2.Monitors evaluation and timelines to ensure appropriate student placement and programming.
3.Promoting the educational development and well being of all students with special needs in the school district.
4.Working cooperatively with teachers, parents, and administrators to meet the needs of all students with special needs.
5.Keeping current and informed on laws, issues, and new developments related to special education.
6.Supporting staff development programs as needed; particularly, to make provisions for the continuing professional growth of staff.
7.Supporting the director in interviewing prospective candidates for open positions along with an interviewing team, and recommending to the Superintendent the best qualified candidate(s) for the job.
8.Observing, conferring with, and advising the Building Principal on the supervision of Special Education staff. Shares responsibility with the Building Principal, Director of Student Services relative to special education teacher evaluations.
9.Facilitating staff meetings with the special education staff with the Director of Student Service.
10.Ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations with regard to special education students.
11.Supporting school based initiatives such as MTSS or PBIS.
12.Overseeing the scheduling of special education students in collaboration with the Building Principal and the Director of Student Services.
13.Coordinating the scheduling of special education staff in consultation with the Building Principal and the Director of Student Services.
14.Promoting parent engagement.
15.Attending regional and state Special Education Administrative meetings.
16.Facilitating the collection of census data related to special education students in the school system.
17.Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating student performance data relating to identified students.
18.Developing, conducting, and analyzing evaluation data relating to special education programs.
19.Using state performance data to address programmatic needs.
20.Identifying the needs of the special education programs; developing and implementing appropriate changes to programs.
21.Visiting and monitoring out-of-district placements.
22.Implementing all policies and regulations of the school system.
23.Coordinating transportation of students with disabilities, in collaboration with the Supervisor of Transportation and the Director of Student Services.
24.Coordinating Assistive Technology modifications for students with disabilities, in collaboration with the Director of Technology and the Director of Student Services.
25.Assisting the Superintendent and the Director of Student Services in the implementation of yearly goals for the school system.
26.Executing other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent, and/or designee and Director of Student Services.
Assistant Principal
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
27.Help maintain daily operations of the school
28.Assist in teacher evaluations and mentoring
29.Participate in district committees that help guide school improvements
30.Work collaboratively with principal and office staff
31.Help organize and facilitate professional development opportunities
32.Assist leading faculty and staff meetings
33.Work with principal, teachers and parents regarding communication, behavior management, attendance policy,
34.Active member of the Principal Advisory Committee.
35.Collaborate with the principal, special education director and staff to create a diverse and inclusive learning environment that benefits all students.
Qualifications:
36.Minimum of 3 years of administrative experience (Preferred)
37.Must hold current RI certification in Administration and Special Education
38.Must be knowledgeable of Google platforms
39.Comfortable with online/virtual meeting platforms including Google Hangouts, Blackboard, Zoom, etc.
40.Skill in working with diverse individuals and handling situations with tact, diplomacy and discretion
41.Knowledge of various special education learning modalities/educational philosophies
42.Demonstrate the highest standards of honesty, integrity, flexibility and responsiveness
43.Ability to be proactive and innovative
44.Ability to build strong teams to meet performance goal
Selected candidates must live on Block Island at least from Monday through Friday and are willing to make last minute adjustments based on weather.
Work year at an annual salary and benefits as determined by the School Committee upon the recommendation of the Superintendent and the Director of Student Services.
