What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technologist I position at Bloodworks NW?
We have a wonderful new job opportunity for a Technologist I in our Biobank Department. The incumbent performs support duties for Biobank Program, including pulling samples, receiving, and sorting products, performing testing and review and manual computer entry. In addition, this will be a shared position with Donor Testing, performing testing, equipment maintenance and review.
Principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to As a Technologist I:
Locate and aliquot samples for sale or storage for Biobank.
Locate and screen donor units for possible sale for Biobank.
Receive and sort red cells and plasmas into proper storage conditions for Biobank.
Locate and discard plasmas for sale or disposal for Biobank.
Communicate with Biobank customers regarding antigen-negative inventory sales and process customer requests.
Receive and process blood orders from multiple customers, including consulting IRL and HS about patient and inventory needs.
Create a Certificate of Analysis for Biobank sales.
Meet new Paid Donors and obtain consent signature, W9, and other required documents.
Perform clerical and data entry functions necessary to support documentation of testing following Bloodworks Quality Policies and Procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
Perform a final review of other technologists’ testing records for accuracy, completeness, run validity, and adherence to SOP, before posting results in the Laboratory Information System(s).
Operate computer systems relevant to the work performed in the department at this level including Surround, BBCS, PC applications, and Reliance ETQ.
Generate sample queries.
Take active responsibility for maintaining competency in areas of training by regularly performing testing within the required frequency. Takes initiative to complete annual competency assessments on time.
Provide excellent customer service to all external and internal customers, including but not limited to telephone communications, direct interactions, and internet/electronic communications.
Participate in departmental activities such as staff meetings and training sessions; provide input to supervisors on ways to strengthen/improve the work of the Department.
Perform routine lab cleaning, manage biohazardous waste appropriately, and follow biohazard safety standards for handling blood.
Comply with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as written.
Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Must qualify as Testing Personnel, High Complexity Testing, under CLIA personnel requirements found in Subpart M of the Code of Federal Regulations. This typically requires a bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science.
MT(ASCP) or equivalent certification; or bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or in medical technology preferred.
Experience working in a union environment (desirable)
Specific job skills include, but are not limited to:
Requires ability to comprehend the criticality of the testing being performed, as it relates to the blood components being prepared for transfusion, or organs being transplanted. Includes a fundamental understanding of the financial value of the testing reagents, blood components being prepared, and the necessity to follow all regulatory rules and regulations (AABB, CFR, EU, CLIA, HIPAA, and State), including FDA’s “Good Manufacturing Practices”.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Demonstrated written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Understanding of the interactions of multiple computer systems within the department, with extensive data entry and review steps.
The ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently while also addressing customer needs.
The ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and with staff from other departments.
Must be able to model a high level of professionalism and teamwork behavior.
Required mental activities include continuous decision-making, interpersonal skills, teamwork, problem analysis, independent judgment and/or action and the ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. The ability to lift and carry 20 pounds throughout a normal day is required, as is the ability to lift 50 pounds occasionally.
The ability to spend time in the -25 to -40 freezer.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This is a highly regulated position and is subject to meeting various regulatory agency and accrediting body rules and regulations. These may include, but are not limited to, FDA, AABB, CLIA, CAP.
Work is conducted in a moderately noisy, high-volume production environment.
Extensive computer work, including viewing of computer display, is a continuous job condition encountered in the performance of this job.
Constant standing is a frequent job condition encountered in the performance of this job.
Extensive close work is an occasional job condition encountered.
As this is an essential position with direct responsibility to patients, the incumbent should be prepared to work extended and/or consecutive shifts and/or possibly at a different location during periods of inclement weather or emergency operations. This position involves direct exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
