General Job Description :
The high school guidance counselor establishes the school counseling program and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program; provides individual and group counseling services to meet the development, preventive and remedial needs of students; will assist students to help them make the decisions that affect their personal and academic development; will work with students to help them choose courses that will affect their later careers; will advise students on both academic and extracurricular activities and will provide students with scholarship information and college related material.

Qualifications :
Master of Arts in Counseling
Valid license as a Counselor as established by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
Physical Requirements :
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 lbs.), reaching, squatting, kneeling.
Performance Responsibilities :
- Coordinate activities in the guidance and counseling program;
- Consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students;
- Provide counseling in family, group or individual settings;
- Coordinates all counseling services for students and assists with the coordination and implementation of student services in the school. Facilitate guidance activities for students, staff and parents;
- Conduct functional behavioral assessment and develop behavioral intervention plans;
- Accurately interprets test results and other student data. The counselor also assists teachers with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment strategies;
- Adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession, and abides by the laws, policies, and procedures that govern the schools. The counselor also participates in professional associations and upgrades professional knowledge and skills when needed.
- Collaboration in student assistance teams;
- Serve as an advocate for students and their families;
- Maintain a current knowledge of community resources;
- Utilize the services of various community agencies;
- Participates in in-service programs as required;
- Serve as a member of the district crisis team;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
