Summary of Duties: The Lab Assistant performs various laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Lab Assistant obtains or receives specimens for laboratory analysis; applies techniques used in fields of bacteriology, hematology, serology, chemistry, urinalysis, etc.; records laboratory test results, and handles communications with doctors, medical technologist, and people in other departments.
Essential Functions:
Operational Tasks:
- Assists physicians in diagnosis of patients’ diseases through accurate examination, testing, and analysis of laboratory specimens.
- Carefully handles all specimens as potentially infectious material to protect all office personnel, including the collection of blood and other specimens under aseptic conditions.
- Performs the following activities: routine testing in hematology, chemistry, serology, virology, bacteriology, and urinalysis.
- Performs tests and documentation for quality control.
- Handles communication between doctors, medical technologists, nurses, front-office personnel, and patients.
- Performs and reports proficiency testing on a rotating schedule.
- Undergoes annual competency testing, to be supervised by a medical technologist.
- Ensures that all patient medical health information is used and disclosed according to HIPAA guidelines.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
Knowledge and Education Requirements:
- High school diploma. Associate’s degree in science-related field preferred or equivalent lab experience
- Familiarity with medical terminology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- At least average computer skills. Experience with electronic medical records systems preferred.
- Ethical conduct.
Physical Requirements:
- Required to wear appropriate PPE for testing patients, including an N95 mask, for much of the time.
- Required to move about inside the office much of the time.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% while on job.
- Normal physical strength to handle routine office materials and tools including the ability to move a 25-pound object.
- Ability to exchange information accurately and effectively.
- Ability to operate a computer and other office machinery.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: Up to $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 32 – 40 per week
