Description
Reporting to the Design Manager, US Academic & Professional Division, the Junior Designer is responsible for designing book covers and jackets and assembling files for print and electronic distribution. Junior Designers are expected to manage the cover workflow through all stages of production, from initial briefing to final files, in line with company-wide schedules, budgets, and quality standards. Covers will consist primarily of templated designs and are delegated according to assigned lists within the division frontlist, with a title load of approximately 180/year (list assignment reviewed annually). This position requires a comprehensive understanding of the print production process, a keen eye for design and typography, and the ability to organize and manage a large workload while independently liaising with editorial and production staff, vendors, freelancers, and printers.

Responsibilities
- Receive cover briefs directly from Executive Editors, create designs, and circulate for approval, revising as needed until design is approved
- Receive full jacket copy directly from Managing Editors, create mechanical files, and circulate for approval, inputting any necessary corrections
- Finalize mechanical files upon receipt of final print specs and export print-ready files for distribution to the printer
- Check quality of cover images, performing image research and licensing stock images as necessary
- Upload print-ready files and pre-publication thumbnails to asset management systems
- Update schedules and project status within internal project management systems
- Assign work to freelance designers as necessary, issuing relevant contracts and processing subsequent invoices
- Attend biweekly Design team meetings and individual 1:1 meetings with the Design Manager
- Some level of design experience in book publishing or a related field
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite on a Mac platform, including a comprehensive understanding of Adobe InDesign
- A thorough understanding of print production, including preparing and flight-checking InDesign files for print
- Attention to detail and a discerning eye for design and typography
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- The ability to process a large volume of work quickly and accurately
- Superior communication skills and the confidence to independently collaborate with both internal stakeholders and external suppliers
