Job Description Title – Principal / Director
Reports To: Superintendent / Assistant Superintendent
FLSA Designation: Exempt
Job Goal: To serve as the professional leader of the school, to work with staff,
students, and community to ensure a high-quality educational program, and
to formulate and accomplish the school mission. To provide leadership in
an environment of high expectations for staff and students.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A master's degree with a major in Instructional Leadership.
2. A valid Alabama certificate to practice as a school administrator for appropriate grade levels.
3. At least three years successful experience in public education.
4. Experience as an assistant principal / principal is preferred.

- Regularly required to speak, listen walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display.

- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, ability to focus, and peripheral vision.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
The Principal should expect to perform the following duties as part of his/her contractual obligations:
1. To direct and coordinate school operations and programs to meet the individual needs of students.
2. Provide instructional leadership to staff including curriculum planning, review and implementation and professional development.
3. Responsible for building administration and the safety and welfare of students and staff.
4. Supervise and evaluate all certified and support staff.
5. Maintain school finances and budgets; adhere to local, state and federal laws, and accounting regulations.
6. Provide general supervision to all students and assist in coordinating transportation for students.
7. Maintain positive communication with staff, parents, parent groups, school volunteers and community leaders.
8. Assist in recruiting, screening, hiring, training, and assigning employees.
9. Assume responsibility for the care and safekeeping of the school buildings and grounds including all furniture, apparatus, equipment, supplies, and other property appurtenance thereto.
10. Plan and supervise fire drills, tornado drills, and an emergency preparedness program.
11. Direct the operation of the Child Nutrition Program in accordance with the policies, rules, and regulations established by the State, Federal, and the local Board.
12. Plan and hold regular faculty meetings requiring all teachers to attend.
13. Assume responsibility for the school bus transportation at the school.
14. Attend principals’ meetings called by the Superintendent.
15. Request permission from Superintendent or his/her designee when necessary to be away from school as much as one-half of a school day. An assistant principal or teacher must be left in charge.
16. Responsible for seeing that each child is under the direct supervision of a teacher at all times during the school day.
17. Responsible for preparation and maintenance of the school budget.
18. Supervise all financial accounting, payroll, record keeping, and required reporting.
19. Supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.
20. Supervise and evaluate the schools’ extracurricular program.
21. Attend school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
22. Establish guides for proper student conduct and maintain student discipline in accordance with State, Federal, and Board policies, rules and regulations.
23. Encourage and work with school support organizations including PTSO, athletic, academic and band booster.
24. Assist in interpreting school and educational programs and in creating good will for public education in Blount County.
25. Maintain highest level of security and confidentiality regarding any and all information gleaned in day to day activities regarding students and staff personally identifiable information, according to FERPA and Blount County Security Use guidelines as well as any and all state and federal statutes.
26. Works as a team member with other administrators.
27. Effectively utilizes personnel to implement appropriate program needs.
28. Remains current in federal, state and local laws, policies and procedures as they relate to Exceptional Education and other relevant programs.
29. Assumes responsibility for scheduling.
30. Ensures appropriate placement and services for students.
31. Provides a safe, orderly environment that facilitates teaching and learning.
32. Fosters a positive climate of high expectations for staff, students, other administrators, the Superintendent and the Board.
33. Demonstrates professional ethics.
34. Perform other duties as might be reasonably assigned by the Superintendent or by direction of the Board.
35. Maintains proper certification by attending college, workshops, and/or professional development courses.
36. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent / Assistant Superintendent.
In all professional and personal relations, the Principal shall be held in observance of a course of conduct consistent with the ethics of the teaching profession.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Employees.
Terms of employment: 222-days
Daily work schedule will be determined by the Superintendent / Assistant Superintendent. Work assignments and schedules are subject to change.
