Under direct supervision, the Equipment Operator III operates heavy road and construction equipment. Responsibilities include performing skilled, semi-skilled and manual unskilled work in the construction, maintenance, and drainage of alleys, streets and other County properties.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs skilled craft duties in the operation of various types of vehicles and heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of county roads and highways;
  • Drives tandem axle dump truck hauling asphalt, sand, dirt, gravel, and other materials to the job site;
  • Operates a paving roller, dirt loader, paving machine, water truck, tanker, pug mill mix machine backhoe, pan, bulldozer, motor grader, gradall, track loader, and front-end loader in performing skilled work on a construction, paving, or drainage project;
  • Operates tractor with bush hog or long arm to mow or till county right-of-ways and recreational fields; using a push mower or weed eater to mow areas inaccessible to bush hog;
  • Uses small hand tools, forklifts, chain saws, commercial weed eaters, and lawn mowers;
  • Operates chipper or other medium equipment on a paving crew;
  • Uses tools including shovels, pneumatic tools, hot/cold pressure washers, power tools, carpenter tools, bush knives, post hole diggers, power tamps and jack hammers;
  • Cleans gutters, culverts, catch basins, and other drainage structures;
  • Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, timber, and mechanical equipment;
  • Provides assistance when necessary in emergency situations and during after-hours or inclement weather conditions;
  • Cleans and maintains equipment;
  • Prepares reports as required such as maintenance and weekly reports;
  • Performs duties of an Equipment Operator I, II, or Laborer as needed; and
  • Performs related work as required and other assigned duties.

It is mandatory for Equipment Operator III to

  • Possess and implement knowledge of traffic rules and regulations;
  • Skillfully operator tractors, heavy trucks, and other automotive equipment under all types of weather conditions;
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions;
  • Effectively making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and demonstrating mechanical capability;
  • Must exhibit flexibility when changes occur and new duties are assigned;
  • Demonstrate a willingness to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member; and
  • Understand and apply policies and procedures of job responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED;
  • Three (3) years of directly related experience;
  • Or equivalent education, and/or experience; and
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License and standard valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting heavy objects (over 5 lbs. but less than 20 lbs.), carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing, or walking for the full workday may also be involved. Some degree of physical effort must be exerted at this level. Travel, particularly during adverse weather conditions and troublesome road conditions and at times during the evening hours is required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment involves continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Work is continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. Work generally contains one or more constant elements of stress such as being under prolonged pressure during emergency situations.
