Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is looking to add to our Finance team and has an opportunity for a Director, Accounting Operations (Controller). The Corporate Controller provides oversight of financial reporting and guides the flow of financial information across the organization to enhance enterprise level strategy execution. This role is accountable for maintaining comprehensive internal controls and efficient business practices designed to mitigate risk and enhance accuracy of financial results in compliance with US generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), as well as appropriate federal, state, and statutory regulations and standards.

What you’ll do
- Financial Reporting: Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements. Review financial reports, presenting insights and recommendations to senior management and the Board.
- Accounting Operations: Manage all accounting functions, including general ledger, cost accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll.
- Process Execution: Drives initiatives to optimize and automate accounting operations to enable effective, efficient, and timely financial accounting reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
- Systems/Data Integration: Ensures accuracy and reliability of financial data created, stored, transformed and transferred within the organization through proactive partnership with IT, upstream and downstream functions.
- Audit and Regulatory Compliance: Ensures accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, regulatory filings, tax filings, audit and compliance reports, and other internal and external reporting requirements.
- Financial Risk Management: Ensures adequate controls, policies, and effective processes are in place to execute on capital structure, investment strategies, and cash management practices including banking activities, cash inflows, and cash outflows
- Strategic Integration: Aligns business strategies with financial accounting and reporting processes to ensure that all parts of the organization are working toward common goals.
- Cultural Integration: aligning organizational cultures and practices to ensure smooth transitions and unified goals.
What you need
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent field
- Certified Public Accountant (US CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) required
- 10 years of progressive experience in public accounting, accounting operations, and financial reporting roles.
- 5 years leadership experience required
- Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning Systems such as Workday & Adaptive Insights
- Strategic Vision & Adaptability: Ability to see the big picture, align integration efforts with organizational goals, and adjust strategies as needed.
- Collaboration & Communication: Proficiency in working effectively with various departments and external partners, with strong verbal and written communication skills to convey complex ideas.
- Leadership & Influence: Capability to lead cross-functional teams, motivate others, and drive integration initiatives.
- Decision-Making & Problem-Solving: Skill in making informed decisions quickly, identifying issues, and implementing effective solutions.
- Risk Management & Change Management: Ability to identify potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and manage resistance during organizational changes.
- Attention to Detail & Analytical Thinking: Precision in handling integration tasks, with a strong ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
- Negotiation & Project Management: Expertise in negotiating with stakeholders and vendors, and managing multiple projects, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines.
Bonus if you have
- Advanced knowledge of GAAP and technical accounting expertise; familiarity with regulatory accounting principles, SAP experience preferred.
