Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is looking to add to our Financial Accounting leadership team and has a new opportunity for a Supervisor Cost Accounting. This position leads and supervises the company’s cost accounting operations, which includes the coding of expenses to appropriate cost centers and lines of business, preparation of journal entries, and cost variance analysis to ensure timely and accurate financial and cost reporting in accordance with GAAP, STAT, Regulatory reporting standards.

Compensation
$96,800 - $115,000

The compensation range for this role is a good faith estimate, it is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid. All offers presented to candidates are carefully reviewed to ensure fair, equitable pay by offering competitive wages that align with the individual's skills, education, experience, and training. What you’ll do
- Lead and manage the daily operations of the cost accounting team, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and BCBSKS Policies. This includes delegating tasks, overseeing the execution of key responsibilities, mentoring staff and fostering professional growth.
- Approve journal entries and cost variance analysis reports, ensuring accuracy and adherence to internal controls and cost allocation methodologies.
- Establish and maintain strong partnerships with internal departments and external stakeholders to provide accurate costing insights, support cross-functional initiatives, and respond timely to audit requests and inquiries.
- Lead cost department optimization projects, the preparation and review of annual cost proposals, and perform impact analysis of proposed cost allocation changes.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on cost accounting standards with specialized knowledge of governmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance, contributing to corporate costing policy development.
- In collaboration with the Financial Accounting Manager, review, maintain, and modify department policies and procedures to enhance cost accounting operations.
- Resolve discrepancies or issues related to costing allocations or ledger balances in a timely manner.
- Stay current with GAAP, STAT, Regulatory standards and changes to reporting requirements for all lines of business. Communicate relevant changes and recommendations to management.
What you need
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related business field required.
- 5 years of progressive experience in financial, regulatory, cost accounting or a related field
- 2 years of leadership experience in a Sr. Analyst, Project leadership, or similar role.
- Normal office environment.
- Ability to work on a computer for extended periods.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of cost accounting and reporting requirements in compliance with GAAP and Statutory Accounting Standards.
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills to guide team members and support their professional development.
- Advanced analytical and strategic thinking abilities, with a focus on problem-solving and decision-making.
- High proficiency in accounting software, financial systems, and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills for collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
- Exceptional organizational and project management abilities to handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Bonus if you have
- Certified Public Accountant (US CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) preferred.
- Master's degree (e.g. Accounting, Finance, M.B.A or related) preferred.
- Experience with activity based costing and governmental accounting standards preferred.
