The Underwriter is responsible for the rating and renewal of group insurance policies and medical underwriting of applications through sound underwriting practices. Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with Advance Insurance Company of Kansas (AICK)’s primary customers, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) Sales team and brokers.

Compensation
$62,640 - $74,000 annually

- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas offers excellent competitive compensation with the goal of retaining and growing talented team members. The compensation range for this role is a good faith estimate, it is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid. All offers presented to candidates are carefully reviewed to ensure fair, equitable pay by offering competitive wages that align with the individual's skills, education, experience, and training. The range may vary above or below the stated amounts.
What you’ll do
- Work with BCBSKS Sales personnel to develop best possible benefit plan(s) for prospective groups which may include review of current carrier’s contracts.
- Send completed proposals to BCBSKS Sales Personnel within 5 business days or the date that is requested (upon receipt of all necessary information). Proposals must be accurate and complete. Broker commission must be clearly disclosed on the proposal(s) for groups utilizing brokers.
- Provide enrollment options for potential new groups to include applicable forms, spreadsheet enrollment submission and data requirements by benefit.
- Coordinates with Sales to ensure accurate and timely submission of enrollment packages for AICK Administration.
- Review sold groups and load into internal tracking system. Request missing information and release the group to Administration for processing when complete,
- Work directly with sales reps and groups to resolve participation discrepancies.
- Through medical underwriting practices, review evidence of insurability applications for acceptance or denial based on the risk of each applicant.
- Review, rate and underwrite amendments on in force policies.
- Coordinate with multiple reinsurers to include rating and ensuring compliance of in force treaties and collaboration on specialized plan designs.
- Participate on AICK’s underwriting work team.
What you need
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strong analytical skills and ability to read and interpret numerous details.
- Ability to identify, interpret and negotiate discrepancies, to include rates and benefits found in competitor policies, spreadsheets and bills.
- Appraise and judge risk and cost associated with accepting or declining group benefits and evidence of insurability applications.
- Manage employer’s confidential financial and employee information to evaluate their benefit programs.
- Must be knowledgeable in all areas of group life/disability products and through knowledge of group rating/underwriting practices to include pricing, standard group underwriting and reinsurance.
- Knowledgeable of Kansas Department of Insurance regulations pertaining to life and disability.
- Provide benefit recommendations as requested by Sales.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in accounting, business, economics, mathematics, statistics or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in underwriting.
- In lieu of degree, minimum of 6 years’ progressive, relevant experience within direct or related field.
