Position Summary :
Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic patient care and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse or RN in charge of the unit. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities :
- Promotes the mission, vision and values of the BMHD.
- Provides direct patient care to adults and children in the hospital nursing departments after completion of observed competencies (vital signs, feeding, bathing, dressing, etc.)
- Communicates to the RN any observed change in patient status and responses such as pain, vital signs or intake and output.
- Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patient.
- Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population as directed by the RN.
- Provides explanation to patient and family prior to administering care to patient and answers questions within scope of practice.
- Responds to call lights in a timely manner.
- Completes computer based training assignments and other required trainings by required due dates.
- Handles and disposes of contaminated materials and hazardous waste, only after proper training and knowledge of required personal protection equipment.
- Understands normal vital sign values and to notify RN for any changes
- Empty, measure and record output from closed drainage systems such as urinary catheters.
- Provides for patient comfort by assisting with personal hygiene needs, pillows, blankets, etc.
- Promotes patient safety by ensuring bed is in low position, side rails are up, assisting patient with ambulation as needed, removing clutter in rooms.
