About Us

Blue Ocean Mariculture was founded in 2009 to pursue the sustainable farming of local Hawaiian marine finfish. We are proud to be the only open ocean mariculture farm in the United States. With first-hand experience in commercial capture fisheries and understand that some farming of the oceans is necessary and inevitable.


We are the exclusive producer of Seriola rivoliana, better known by the market name Hawaiian Kanpachi, a premium sashimi-grade fish coveted by chefs at top sushi and fine dining restaurants everywhere. Hawaiian Kanpachi is raised in the clear, clean waters off Kona, Hawaii, using the most environmentally sustainable aquaculture farming methods.


About the Role

The Offshore Operation Trainer works with the farm management team and Operations Supervisors in the onboarding and training of offshore Production Divers. It is the Operations Trainer responsibility to ensure that new team members are onboarded successfully completing the entire new hire training checklist and ensuring that all new hires feel comfortable and confident as they integrate into the daily operations of the farm. It is also the Operations Trainer’s responsibility to ensure potential new hires are properly vetted for the minimum skills need to maintain a safe work environment offshore prior to a new hire offer being made.


Duties & Responsibilities

Production & Projects

  • Assist in evaluating potential new hires to ensure they possess the skills and mindset needed to thrive as part of the offshore team.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate comprehensive onboarding training for new team members.
  • Track and document the progress and skill development of new hires throughout the training process.
  • Collaborate with Operations Supervisors for 30-, 60-, and 90-day check-ins with new hires to confirm adherence to SOPs and address any additional training needs.
  • Collaborate with the farm management team to create individualized development plans for first-year team members.
  • Deliver aquaculture and fish health training to new hires following the successful completion of their initial 90-day onboarding period.
  • Provide training on small vessel trailering and operations for all new offshore team members.
  • Partner with the Dive Safety Lead and Operations Supervisors to ensure new employees develop a solid understanding of and confidence in the emergency action plan.
  • Perform all duties required to support department operations while maintaining a safe work environment.

Team

  • Consistently comply with, and monitor team’s compliance of, Company policies and procedures, including safety and biosecurity protocols.
  • Train and mentor team members on daily operations, fish husbandry, maintenance, and dive operations. Develop SOPs as needed.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining a high performing team, including participating in the hiring process, conduct training, and assistance with conflict resolution.
  • Promote a culture of safety, integrity, and excellence.


What You'll Bring

  • Prefer one (1) year of experience leading offshore fish farm operations.
  • Prefer two (2) years commercial dive experience and strong mechanical skills.
  • Prefer one (1) year as a captain operating large vessels in near shore or offshore waters. (100 ton USCG license preferred)
  • Hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Be self-motivated, independent worker with strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including ability to multi-task and manage paperwork.
  • Have strong computer skills, including all MS Office applications.
  • Have strong written and oral communication skills and ability to write reports and presentations.
  • Work atypical schedule, including Saturdays, Sundays & holidays.
  • Be able to consistently lift 50lbs, frequently climb 4 feet, & work in a sunny, hot, & humid environment.

Those with offshore fish farm operations, scuba or commercial dive experience and/or captain's license is preferred, candidates with these experiences (all or one) will be give priority consideration.


A pre-employment background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle report are required. This position is subject to the US Coast Guard drug testing program under Title 46 CFR 16.230.
