What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electric Motor Design Engineer – Electrical Engineer II position at Blue Origin?
This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers who develop and test cryocoolers designed for zero-boiloff (ZBO) applications, you will focus on the rapid design and implementation of high efficiency electric motors and generators for gas processing high-speed turbomachinery. Your expertise in electromagnetic design will be utilized for all aspects of designing, building, and testing electric motor/generators components for use in Brayton cycle cryocoolers and power systems. You will lead the complete life cycle from requirements definition, analysis, design, development, manufacturing, assembly, verification, integration, and flight. This position is based in Kent, WA.

Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or related field
- 2 years’ experience in electric motor design, manufacturing, and testing.
- Fundamental knowledge for different type of electric motors such as permanent magnet synchronous motors, induction motors, brushless DC motors, stepper motors.
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
- Excellent verbal, written communication skills, including presenting complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s or Ph.D. degree in mechanical or Electrical engineering or related field
- Proficiency in electromagnetic fundamentals and software for electric motors/generators design such as ANSYS MotorCAD and Maxwell, COMOSOL, MotorSolver, and Matlab/Simulink.
- Experience with electric motors manufacturing processes such as stator winding, lamination stacking, and stator varnishing (vacuum impregnation), mechanical assembly.
- Knowledge of motor control systems, including speed and torque control, sensor feedback, and closed-loop position.
- Experience with FEA tools for structural and thermal analysis (ANSYS workbench is preferred)
- Familiarity with gas bearing turbomachinery components.
- Experience with high-speed data acquisition systems and instrumentation such as, thermocouples, accelerometers, proximity probes, etc..
- Experience with developing, writing, and updating technical procedures, standards, and specifications.
- Highly organized, safety and quality conscious, and ability to work independently on rapid development programs.
