Blue Ridge Community College is seeking a Campus Security Officer (CSO) to be a uniformed presence on campus, promote lawful behavior and protect the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a professional, efficient and courteous manner. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Public Safety and serving as a staff member of the Public Safety Office.
Blue Ridge Community College is seeking a Campus Security Officer (CSO) to be a uniformed presence on campus, promote lawful behavior and protect the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a professional, efficient and courteous manner. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Public Safety and serving as a staff member of the Public Safety Office.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Performing physical security of assigned buildings by controlling building access, monitoring security cameras, patrolling building and parking lots, reporting any safety hazards and suspicious and/or criminal activity to the Public Safety Office, and enforcing BRCC’s Public Safety Office policies and regulations
- Various Public Safety administrative duties, including but not limited to making and maintaining Student IDs and parking passes
- Assignment to any special events and activities to provide security for that function. This may include controlling the flow of guest into buildings and parking lots, checking guest belongings, and collecting proper passes and tickets.
- Maintaining access control of campus; unlocking and locking classrooms and maintaining physical security of exterior doors
- Maintain CPR, AED, CSO, DCJS certifications
- Maintaining inventory and control of all sensitive items and equipment
- Keeping visitor logs and daily crime reports up to date
- Performing daily inspections of all assigned facilities and properties to ensure the cleanliness of those properties and report any issues found
- Conducting security inspections and preparing reports
- Acting as first responder and reporting on emergency situations and maintaining related documentation
- Checking for proper operation of physical plant equipment
- Raising and lowering flags
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong communication skills, including oral, written and listening skills. Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and supervisors.
- Must pass background investigation including finger-based criminal history record inquiries to both the Central Criminal Records Exchange and the Federal Bureau of Investigation
- Willingness to obtain a DCJS Security certification and Campus Security Officer training within 30 days of hire date
- Willingness and ability to conduct multiple walking patrols per shift, including during inclement weather
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer using current software programs and telecommunications equipment including fire alarm systems, security alarm systems, video surveillance system, and other security equipment
- Ability to handle multiple incidents simultaneously, set priorities, and professionally and calmly handle stressful situations on a daily basis
- Ability to gather information and draft factual reports
- Ability to work effectively with minimal direction
- Strong teamwork, problem-solving, time management, planning and coordination skills
- CPR and/or first aid training
- Valid driver’s license
- Flexibility to adapt work schedule as needed and cover gaps in coverage to include nights, weekends, holidays, and other shifts
- Current DCJS Certification as a Campus Security Officer
- Extensive knowledge/experience in the fields of security or law enforcement
- Current First Aid, CPR and AED training certification
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and capabilities
